The good and the Ugly

I got two movies to watch tonight. "Half-Caste" is a horrible horror movie from South Africa. It is about a leopard-man. The kernel of the premise was good. The writing portrayed a very bigoted American view of the native culture. Some of this seemed intended, and worked to set up the Hollywood documentary makers in a bad light. The lighting did not help set the mood very well. Dark does not always equal spooky. These are people who need to re-read Painting With Light. The editing was very amateurish. The sound effects were stupid, at time actually taking away from what was on screen. Many of the horrific moments depended totally on the soundtrack. This was probably because they were too cheap to set up the shots they really needed. The movie holds much to Blair Witch, but tries to outdo it without breaking the mold. I can't really recommend it.
Then I watched Wonder Boys. I think every writer should see this movie. It hit on many aspects of the writer's life. E said she felt sorry for enjoying reading. She thought writers go through too much in their lives to put out their work. She said we're worse than musicians. And we don't even get the big bucks. I thought it was uplifting. Perhaps this is one that non-writers won't really get. Watch this movie, find out for yourself.
