Ed, Birthday, and Somebody Famous
Last week was the birthday of one of the admissions office's administrative assistants, Carol. She was on vacation, however, so we will be celebrating this afternoon with tortilla chips, salsa, and smoothies. Woo hoo! (Although a little cake icing would have been nice.)
Then this evening we're offering an information session about our graduate education programs: our Master of Arts in Elementary Education and our Master of Arts in Special Education. Anyone interested in those programs can come. It's at 6:00 p.m. in our Parlors, 2nd floor of the Administration Building. Dane Dornin from the Graduate and Adult Studies Office will be there as well as faculty to discuss the programs.
Julie Young, an English major who graduated in 2004, earned a mention on BlogScholar, an academic blogging portal.

Sherry's Last Day
Today is Sherry's last day before her maternity leave begins. Her baby is due soon. She hopes to be back to work around the fourth Monday in August (in time for the last few orientations). The Graduate and Adult Studies Office won't be the same without her!

Winds 'n Jazz
Sunday starts our Winds 'n Jazz program. Eighth graders through seniors in high school will arrive on campus to perform in ensembles and take classes. And, of course, there will be recreational activities, too! The program ends on Saturday morning, July 2, with a recital.
Winds 'n Jazz is part of Seton Hill's Community Music Program which has all kinds of ensembles and classes. Even dance classes!

WPF Alumni Retreat
Previously, I've written a little about our Writing Popular Fiction students who are coming on campus. Well, most of them arrived last night for a gathering (a little work but mostly play) before they start classes today.
New this year, though (at least I think it's new this year), is a retreat sponsored by the alumni of the program. It looks to be a pretty nifty retreat.
In addition, I happen to know (because I spend all my free time there) that some of the alumni and faculty will be signing their books at our local Barnes and Noble this coming Friday night. I may have to stop out.

July Orientations
Just a few more weeks until our next orientations! The second orientation for freshmen of the four is on Friday, July 15--my 35th birthday! We have about 95 students signed up so far to attend but I would imagine we will hit our limit of 100 before that day arrives.
Then the week after on Saturday, July 23, is our third freshmen orientation for the summer. There are 50 students planning to attend that one so far, but--trust me--it will get bigger.
I can't wait to meet the newest flock!

Criminal Justice
Woo hoo! Criminal Justice is now a full-fledged major at Seton Hill.
We've had for some time a criminal justice concentration under a sociology major. But now students can really earn a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice. Cool, huh?

I am about to sneak up to the parlors for a surprise baby shower for Sherry Spataro who is one of the administrative assistants in the Graduate and Adult Studies Office. Shhh!

India
Today, a few of us are meeting about the possibility of recruiting students from India. Should be interesting! The President, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, one of our Board Trustees, and I will be meeting over lunch to discuss the feasibility. The Trustee has connections in India so I'm interested to hear what he has to say.
Wouldn't it be great to have even more diversity on campus than we do now?!?!?!?

Croquet
No, Seton Hill is not planning to start intercollegiate croquet (is there such a thing?)! But I did spend several hours yesterday with other Seton Hill people at the annual croquet tournament; the University has a pair play every year. Team Duffy and Cooper didn't get as far in the rankings as they often do, but they still had a good showing. The "team" is made up of Jim Duffy, who is the husband of administrative assistant Peggy Duffy, and Eric Cooper, my husband.
The duo lost their first match--which they never do (Eric said they were playing to the level of their competition)--but got to play again since it was double elimination. They then won their next two matches. When they went up for their fourth game I was praying pretty hard that they would lose. It was hot out there!
Luckily, they did lose and we could all get some well-earned shade. ;)
Croquet wasn't the only thing that made the weekend eventful, though. The HOBY panel was great! Very interesting. And I was introduced by a terrific student, Lisa from Gateway High School. She interviewed me and then wrote up an introduction for me to provide before I spoke on the panel topic, "Higher Education: How to get the most from your education." She did a great job at the mic!
I continued to meet neat students at the college fair: Jenna from Somerset who was interested in basketball, business, and teaching(actually I met two Jennas Saturday); Josh from Chestnut Ridge High School who is interested in chemistry and forensic science; Tommy from Belle Vernon Area H. S. (my alma mater) who is interested in Spanish and organic chemistry; and Caitlin from Uniontown who is interested in law, theatre, biology, and cheerleading (she was thrilled to hear we are starting scholarships for cheerleading!).

HOBY
Tomorrow, Jessie, the new admissions counselor, and I are going to an event for students who have been selected as Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) Leaders. We have to be there at 7:30 a.m. (blah!). I'll be presenting as part of a panel. Each guest speaker will have five minutes to speak in response to the topic “Higher Education – How Do You Get the Most out of Your Education?” There are five other people on the panel besides me. After the panel, Jessie and I will staff a table of Seton Hill materials at a college fair-type thing. We should get a chance to meet some really terrific students. Kristen Lippencott is already there as she volunteers with our area HOBY group.

WPF Residency
Soon, one of our most fun groups will be on campus: our Writing Popular Fiction students. Seton Hill has a Master of Arts in Writing Popular Fiction that teaches students how to write fiction that people will actually read: mysteries, romance, children's literature, science fiction. The students will be arriving on June 21 and will be in classes and hearing speakers until they depart on June 26.
Also, on that Sunday, 9 of those students are graduating! I particularly like this commencement ceremony because it is so small and intimate. And short. It takes place in Cecelian Hall where all of our Honors Convocations take place.

CHS
Yesterday, Mary Ann Gawelek and I met with some of the administrators at Greensburg Salem School District: the superintendent, the high school principal, and the director of secondary ed. Among other things, we discussed Seton Hill's College in High School program, aka CHS. CHS is when high school students, usually seniors, take high level (AP, Honors) courses at their high schools and earn Seton Hill credit for it. These courses, AP Calculus, for example, go through a process here at the University to be approved for CHS credit. Then students take classes as they normally would and can then receive a SHU transcript to use if they attend Seton Hill after graduation--or to take to another college of their choice. Cool, huh?
So far we mostly do CHS with Catholic schools:
BISHOP CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL (Ebensburg, PA)
DONAHUE HIGH SCHOOL (McMechen, WV)
BISHOP MCCORT HIGH SCHOOL (Johnstown, PA)
GEIBEL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL (Connellsville, PA)
GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC (Greensburg, PA)
SALPOINTE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL (Tucson, AZ)
SETON-LASALLE HIGH SCHOOL (Pittsburgh, PA)

Portfolio
I have a meeting today at 11:00 about Seton Hill's Portfolio. This is a pretty neat thing we do here at the University. All students seeking a bachelor's degree are required to create a portfolio of their time here on the hill. You can read more about it at: http://www.setonhill.edu/academics/index.cfm?ACID=115

Jessie
The new admissions counselor for northwestern PA and New York starts Monday! Woo hoo! I think you'll really like her; she's enthusiastic and fun. Her name is Jessie, and she has a marketing degree. She'll be attending a college fair with me on Saturday, June 11, north of Pittsburgh. Look for her face soon at http://www.setonhill.edu/academics/index.cfm?ACID=116&T1=122

Alumni Weekend 2005
This year's Alumni Weekend starts tomorrow afternoon. I always try to go to Alumni Weekend even if it is not my reunion year simply because I like the event, and I enjoy talking to other alums about what Seton Hill was like before I got my bachelor's degree here in 1992. Some of the stories are wild!
This year I won't be here because I will be doing a bike ride for the Leukemia Society in Tahoe on Sunday. I fly out tomorrow.
My favorite Alumni Weekend event, though, is always the Presentation of Distinguished Alumni Leadership Awards that occurs at dinner on Saturday. Well, maybe next year.
