Employee Day

Today, most offices here at the University close at noon because today is Seton Hill Employee Day at nearby Idlewild Park. Employees and their families and friends can get discounted tickets to spend the day at the park plus dinner will be served in a big pavilion. I think it's supposed to be a pretty nice afternoon weather-wise.

Personally, skee ball and miniature golf are my favorites at the park.

From Guest Blogger, Kristen Lippencott, Admissions Counselor

This week on campus SHU hosted the Neighborhood Academy for their third summer camp. There are 39 students and 8 counselors on campus participating in a number of activities. On Wednesday they worked in the SHU gardens and did some general weeding and helped make our campus even more beautiful.

On Monday, I gave a tour to those students who had not been here previously and they were extremely interested in the campus and asked great questions about the school and some of the buildings and paintings. I also facilitated a presentation for the entire group about the college selection process. We did a group activity about what they were expecting when they get to college, and what some of the challenges to overcome would be. I was shocked and pleased by the realistic and honest responses they had and shared with the rest of us.

Friday morning, they will have a closing ceremony from 10:00 – 12:00. Looking forward to next year already!

A New Look

Current student Evan Reynolds is suggesting a new look for Seton Hill's new media journalism (aka NMJ) blog. Journalism - New Media is a University major that combines courses like "Writing for the Internet" with English classics like "Major British Writer."

Dust Jacket

Current student Karissa Kilgore's blog, "DustJacket," about Seton Hill's summer reading book was cited recently in the Community College English blog. Cool, huh?

Athletic Luncheon

The Admissions staff will be heading to a luncheon meeting with the Athletic department in a few minutes to discuss how to work together in the coming recruitment year. This way the coaches will know when Open Houses and Sleepovers are. In addition, they'll be able to ask any questions of us while we are all in the same room.

Plus, it's always good to have food at a meeting!

Third Orientation

Well, I'm here this morning at the third orientation for incoming freshmen. Smaller group this time; we had 70 signed up as of Thursday. Not surprising since we have already had about 216 incoming freshmen attend orientations.

The Griffin mascot is here again this week. It's funny, though, the person in the Griffin costume is much taller than last week's person so we've had a blast making jokes about how the Griffin has grown over the past week. We also think he's walking a little oddly. Maybe his "pants" are too short for him.

Although the Griffin may be different this week, the Danishes over at the McKenna Center still look as scrumptious. Wish you were here.

Super Size Me!

Morgan Spurlock, who created the incredibly interesting (and slightly gross) documentary "Super Size Me," will be coming to Seton Hill on October 6. My husband and I have been watching Spurlock's new series "30 Days" on FX with great interest (although we skipped the episode about steroids because neither of us cared about that). Heck, anything that keeps us up until 11 p.m. on a school night has to be pretty interesting. ;)

Concert in the Park

Every year, St. Clair Park in Greensburg offers free concerts every Friday evening of June, July, and August. The musicians have been from all over the world playing jazz, rock, country, and some tunes that don't easily fit into any category.

This Friday, Seton Hill has invited alumni and guests to get together to listen to a band called FRUiT. (I heard them last year; they were great!) In addition, for a small donation, alumni and guests can have a nice dinner on the lawn of breaded chicken salad, sliced filet on French baguette, or smoked grilled vegetables on toasted parmesan bread.

Instructional Design

Today at 4 p.m. the Office of Graduate and Adult Studies is offering an information session about Seton Hill's Master of Education in Instructional Design. It's an excellent program for people in business or teaching who want to add technology to what they are already doing.

Second Freshman Orientation

Today is the Second Freshman Orientation (and my 35th birthday!). We are expecting about 108 students here today. Right now families are being escorted to the McKenna Athletic Center while their students get their picture IDs taken at the Registrar's Office. Soon the families will be listening to presentations on Seton Hill's mission and identity while their students are taking a writing assessment.

Next week, on Saturday, July 23, is our Third Freshman Orientation. So far we have about 65 students signed up for that one. But, trust me, it will become much larger by the time the day arrives.

Maybe I'll see you then!

More Information Sessions

The Office of Graduate and Adult Studies is offering two information sessions today! One for our M.S. in Physician Assistant and one for our M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy. Dane Dornin is running the MFT session while Jenell is running the PA session.

We almost thought there'd be a problem with holding the PA information session since the faculty member who was presenting called this morning to tell us he has an eye infection. Yuck. Another faculty member, James Hull, stepped in, though, so everything ended up just fine.

Science Quest

Well, the Science Quest students have been on campus since Sunday evening! They'll be here until their graduation ceremony on Friday.

I need to email Sister Susan Yochum, who coordinates the event, to find out how many Science Questers we have this year. The young women are from grades 7th to 12th.

Debbie's BD

Debbie, in the Office of Graduate and Adult Studies, has a birthday today. Woo hoo! (I got her a blue satin belt from Casual Corner because there is a big sale going on there right now.)

We aren't celebrating her birthday officially, though, until Tuesday. There are just too many people on vacation this week!

Catholic Social Justice

On Monday, July 11, I'll be lecturing in Eric Cooper's Senior Seminar course. All students graduating from Seton Hill with a bachelor's degree take Senior Seminar; it's the culminating course of the liberal arts experience here. It is supposed to tie everything together.

The lecture I am often asked to do is on Catholic Social Justice. Catholics don't have the corner on the market when teaching about social justice but it is a very important Catholic teaching. I frequently do the lecture in Eric's class (as his wife I kind of have to), but Mary Ann Gawelek and Phil Rostek have also asked me to lecture on the topic in their Senior Seminars.

We get into great discussions during the topic! We argue about war, poverty, pacifism, natural resources, money. I show a couple of videos too. It's a whirlwind crash course on Catholic social teaching.

The event will begin with a 12:30 pm shotgun start. Registration and lunch will be served at 11 am. Dinner and awards will follow the event. The event will be a four person scramble.

Summer Reading

As some of you know, Seton Hill, for several years now, has provided books to incoming freshmen during summer orientations. The incoming freshmen are supposed to read this book over the summer and then there are various discussions and activities that occur around the book once school starts.

This year's book is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon. Rising SHU Junior (and long-time blogger) Karissa Kilgore currently has a blog on the book. It's pretty nifty. I suggest you check it out.

Remember that the university is closed on Monday for Independence Day so you may not be hearing from me again till Tuesday. Have a good holiday!
