Catholic Social Justice

On Monday, July 11, I'll be lecturing in Eric Cooper's Senior Seminar course. All students graduating from Seton Hill with a bachelor's degree take Senior Seminar; it's the culminating course of the liberal arts experience here. It is supposed to tie everything together.

The lecture I am often asked to do is on Catholic Social Justice. Catholics don't have the corner on the market when teaching about social justice but it is a very important Catholic teaching. I frequently do the lecture in Eric's class (as his wife I kind of have to), but Mary Ann Gawelek and Phil Rostek have also asked me to lecture on the topic in their Senior Seminars.

We get into great discussions during the topic! We argue about war, poverty, pacifism, natural resources, money. I show a couple of videos too. It's a whirlwind crash course on Catholic social teaching.

Ms. Cooper:

you said: Catholics don't have the corner on the market when teaching about social justice but it is a very important Catholic teaching. I certainly agree with you about the importance of Catholic Social Teaching. I'm curious, though. What other teachings on Social Justice do you think "compete" with CST? My own studies have revealed few that have the consistency and balance that address the full reality of humanity's lived experience and our obligation to live in Justice and Charity. I'm curious to learn what, if anything, Catholic Social Doctrine could learn from other social justice teachings. To be honest with you, I'm somewhat skeptical that other SJTs have something more valid to offer CST. But I'm open to being convinced otherwise.

Thanks so much for your comment! I wish I had more time for us to talk/write/blog/comment. But I'm heading into a meeting with our President.

I'm not comfortable talking in terms of teachings "competing" but I can direct you to some other "non-Catholic" social justice teaching. Check out The Parliament of World Religions at www.cpwr.org. Also, in the 1980s, the Methodist Bishops issued "In Defense of Creation: The Nuclear Crisis and a Just Peace." You may want to check it out as well.
