Tonight there will also be a haunted movie night. Movies will start playing at 7pm in Administration 308. There will be three Halloween movies. Nothing gets you ready for Halloween like sitting down and watching scary films.

Finally, there will be a Halloween Harvest Dance on Saturday night. The dance will be from 10pm-2am in Cecilian Hall. Don't forget to wear your favorite costume, because prizes will be awarded for the best costume. Msn.com provides Halloween information including scary moments, favorite costumes, party ideas, etc.

Last Chance for Open House

If you are in high school and considering attending Seton Hill, then you will benefit a great deal from attending Open House this weekend. Choosing a university is a major decision, because you will be spending the next four years of your life there. The more you know about a school, the easier your choice will be. Seton Hill offers two Open Houses a year to help high school students become familiar with Seton Hill. You and your family are invited to attend the first Open House on Saturday, October 29. The Open House will include breakfast, a student-led campus tour, financial aid workshops and opportunities to talk with faculty members. Scholarship testing is also available for seniors upon request. Tours will be given by current Seton Hill students who are willing to answer your questions. Seton Hill will continue to take reservations until Friday. You can RSVP at 724-838-4255 or admit@setonhill.edu

Enjoy your visit at Seton Hill University!

Happy Wednesday!

Guess what? It's still raining. At least the snow has stopped. Monday night the mountain elevations got around six inches of snow! It's only October!

Tomorrow there are two events scheduled on campus. At 8pm in Administration 402 the movie The Island will be showing. The movie will not be available to rent until December 13.

There is also an Art Therapy information session. If you are interested in applying to the program, this is a greater opportunity to have your questions answered and meet some of the faculty. The session will be at 5pm in Bayley 210.

Another Rainy Day

Once again we have another rainy day. This is the perfect chance to stay inside and catch up on school work, since sometimes nice weather is a distraction. I heard this morning that it could go into the 30s tonight. Make sure you unpack your winter blankets if you haven't yet.

The rain is not going to keep Seton Hill from providing lots of activities this week and weekend. This weekend is Halloween and Seton Hill offers a variety of ways to celebrate it. Later in the week I will include more details on the events.

Tomorrow there will be a trip to Wal Mart. Vans will leave from Lynch at 8pm and 9:15pm.

Have a great Monday!

Movie Night

The temperatures have started to drop, but at least it is not snowing yet. I hope everyone is keeping warm today. If you want to stay indoors tonight then come and watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Johnny Depp stars as the new Willy Wonka. This new movie is similar to the old movie, but the special effects are updated. The movie will be showing at 8pm in Administration 402. Come and judge whether this remake can compare to the classic.

It's time to register for Spring classes!

If you are a student you have probably received a letter in the mail with your class registration sheets for Spring 2005. This can be a very hectic time trying to decide what classes to take and figuring out how to do your registration sheets. If you are an upper classman you are probably a pro at this, but I can remember how I felt uneasy my freshmen year.

The first step is to pick up a Schedule of Classes from the Registrar's Office, and then set up an appointment with your academic advisors. Search through the schedule and see what classes you need and what classes are available. The book will give you the name of the class, Course ID, the instructor, the time and day(s) the class meets, and the location.

Before you meet with your advisor it is a good idea to already have a plan for what you want to take next semester. Also, I suggest making a list of questions you want to ask your advisor so your meeting is productive. Take advantage of receiving assistance from your advisor, because he/she is here to help you.

Once you decide on your classes and have your advisor's approval, then it is time to register. There are three ways to register for courses:
* You can go online to Campus Connect and register for the classes you decided on.
* After you have your form completed you can drop it off in the Registrar's Office (Admin 110). I have always registered this way, because I feel better knowing that I turned it in and the person received it.
* Finally, you can mail or fax your completed form to the office on or before the appropriate date.

There are different days to turn in your forms. Graduate students and Senior have the first opportunity to register. If you are a freshmen you may think this is unfair, but it is actually very logical. Classes can only admit a certain number of students. If you are a senior you need to be guaranteed a spot. It would be much easier for a freshmen to have another opportunity to take a class, than a graduating senior. Since classes do fill up, it is a good idea to register on the first date available to you. Below are the dates for registering:
* Wednesday, November 9, 2005 Graduate students.
* Thursday, November 10, 2005 Seniors, Second Degree, and post-baccalaureate Teaching Certificate students.
* Friday, November 11, 2005 Juniors.
* Monday, November 14, 2005 Sophomores
* Tuesday, November 15, 2005 Freshmen
* Wednesday, November 15, 2005 Unclassified students (not degree seeking)

Pages 1-3 in the Schedule of Classes includes detailed information on registration. Remember to register early so that you will have a greater number of course options. If you have any questions post a comment or contact the Registrar's Office.

Filling out a new registration card means that the Fall Semester is half way through. I hope everyone has had a great beginning to the 2005-2006 school year.

Fall Break is Here!

Although this has been an event filled and hopefully an educationally enriching semester, everyone deserves a little break from classes. Seton Hill University is currently on Fall Break. This is a great time to relax, visit friends and family, and catch up on all your schoolwork. I hope everyone makes the most of their break. Classes will resume on Wednesday morning. On Friday, Seton Hill will be taking a trip to Kennywood Park. The park is currently having its annual Fright Nights. I attended this event last year. Many of the rides open up and are decorated. Vans will leave Lynch at 7:30, and then depart from Kennywood at 1am. The student price is only $9.00.

Have a great break!

Seton Hill Sleepover

As high school draws to a close, you begin to think about what you want to do in the future. This is a familiar experience for me, because I graduated in 2002. I remember how difficult it was to choose a college. Do I want to go away? What is college like? What will the professors be like? Will I get lost at a big school? You may also be thinking of all these questions. In the end I chose Seton Hill due to its small size and strong academics. If you are thinking about Seton Hill as a possibility, then it is a great idea to attend a Seton Hill Sleepover. Each semester there are two sleepovers. The first one for this year began tonight. While on campus you will stay in a real dorm room with current university students. You will attend activities and classes, and you will get to see what attending Seton Hill is really like. This is your chance to get to know Seton Hill, meet the students and faculty, and just have fun!

Space is limited...Reserve your place now in the next Sleepover! Call the Admissions office at: 1-800-826-6234 or send us an email today at admit@setonhill.edu

Sleepover Dates:
Fall 2005:
October 11-12, 2005
November 15-16, 2005

Spring 2006:

If you are new to the area, then welcome to Steelers country. Pittsburgh fans are one of a kind. Tonight the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football. Kick off is at 9pm, and the game will be televised on ABC. Go Steelers!

Morgan Spurlock Lecture and Weekend Activities

Last night Morgan Spurlock gave a lecture in Cecilian Hall. Spurlock was given an informative and comical introduction by Dr. Frank Klapak. The performance by Spurlock was also very entertaining and informative. Spurlock shed light on the fast food industry, obesity in America, his motivation for "Super Size Me," what it was like eating McDonald's for 30 days, and also what he has been doing since the movie. Spurlock finished the evening by answering questions from the audience, and also did a book signing after the show.

******

There are many activities this weekend on and off campus. Tonight, the Seton Hill Theatre presents the opening night of Fuddy Meers. The information on the show says the audience will "laugh 'til you lose your mind." The play shows the life of the main character Claire who suffers from psychogenic amnesia where she loses her memory every night. Seton Hill Theatre will perform “Fuddy Meers” October 7, 2005 - 8:00 PM; October 8 - 8:00 PM; October 9 - 2:00 PM; October 12 - 10:30 AM; October 13 - 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM; October 14 and 15 - 8:00 PM All performances are held in Reeves Theatre on Seton Hill's Greensburg, Pa. campus. Tickets are $12, or $10 each for groups of 16 or more. $5 student rush tickets are available five minutes before curtain.

Tomorrow the Seton Hill Griffins football team is home at Offutt Field. The Griffins will take on Tiffin University. Kick-off is at 2:00. Good luck Griffins!!!

Also, there is a trip to Washington D.C. tomorrow. During my freshmen year I attended this trip, and it remains one of my most memorable college experiences. Students are taken by bus to D.C. and given the day to explore the monuments, museums, and various other tourism attractions.

A complete list of activities for the weekend is listed on the calendar of events.

Have a good weekend, and don't forget to post a comment if you attend an event this weekend.

Morgan Spurlock

Tonight at 7:30, Morgan Spurlock will be at Seton Hill. Morgan Spurlock spent thirty days eating nothing but McDonald's food for his documentary "Super Size Me." The documentary was nominated for an Academy Award. After the documentary, Spurlock started a television show "30 Days," in which he enters a lifestyle different from his own.

College students are generally very busy. Sometimes we do not have enough time to eat right, so instead we get fast food. Maybe Spurlock will be able to shed some light on what fast food does to our bodies.

A Reflection on Homecoming

Last weekend was extremely busy due to all the Homecoming activities. I was able to attend the women's soccer game. The women's team won 7-0. I talked to many people who went to the football game, Family Day, the pep rally, and other events. If you attended an event feel free to comment about it. Everyone has different feelings about Homecoming. A freshman who attended for the first time, might feel differently than a senior student. How was it to have a football game to attend during Homecoming for the first time ever? Also, by sharing your experiences you may be able to help prospective students get a different look at Seton Hill.

The Benefits of Reeves Memorial Library

“We don’t all wear glasses and
have buns in our hair”
-Helene Ciarochi

When choosing a university, many factors come into play. You must consider the programs available, financial aid, academics, faculty, etc. Another item to look into is your campus library. This may seem trivial, but you will quickly learn that while in college your library may become your best friend. Seton Hill is the home of Reeves Memorial Library. I got a chance to talk to the librarians and go on a tour, so I can provide you with useful information.

General library information can be found at the library’s home page. Instead of providing book names, hours of operation, and other information that is easily available, I decided to focus on what makes Reeves interesting and special. No matter what your major or interests are, the library will meet your academic and personal reading needs.

Special Collections
You may be familiar with the fiction, non-fiction, and reference sections, but did you know that Reeves also has “special collections?” These collections include a Holocaust collection and a newly renovated children’s literature section.

The Holocaust Collection, a private room in the center of the library, helps provide references to Holocaust study. The atmosphere is created through the décor of the room, which includes photographs and paintings depicting the hardships faced during the Holocaust. The room boasts a wealth of historical information in the form of fiction books, non-fiction books, videos, children’s books, and references. The room also has trunks containing an assortment of information, which the library lends out to local schools. Although nothing can take away the pain caused by the Holocaust, becoming informed can have a positive influence on the future. The room provides enough information to satisfy students who are personally interested in finding out more, or those who plan on doing in-depth research.

The library also contains a Children’s Literature Collection. Marcia Pietrala, librarian, acknowledged that this room would not be possible if it were not for Mrs. Catherine Celli. Mrs. Celli, a SHU graduate, “was a wonderful benefactress of the library” said Pietrala. The money bequeathed was used to expand the children’s collection of books, as well as purchase a trapezium, book browser, a reading terrace, and a puppet theater. The room was decorated in the true spirit of a child, but Seton Hill students Brian Blasko, Adam Bonfanti, Sarah Elwood, Cayla Glover, and Michael Diezmos.

You may be thinking, “How will a children’s collection help me?” You would be surprised at just how useful it may be. If you are an education major there is a large collection of children’s literature, which you may be able to use in the classroom. The books may also prove to be beneficial for students majoring in Family Therapy, Psychology, or Counseling. If you are a theatre major you may be able to use the new puppet theater. This summer I used the room, when I helped out with a book day for children. The library was very willing to provide the home for this event. Children from the area spent the day reading, doing crafts, making book marks, and each left with a bag full of books.

Information Literacy Program
The library is a large building filled with countless books, so it may be intimidating at first. How will I find the book I need? Where do I look first? The library takes into account that students may need a little bit of help navigating in the library. With this in mind Reeves Library created the Information Literacy Program. Often times during your freshmen year, several of your classes will travel to the library. When in the library, students will be guided through how to use the library effectively. Pietrala said, “The purpose of the program is to help students be able to identify, locate, evaluate, extract, and employ information.” The program makes it possible for students to learn the necessary skills to be able to use the library independently. Ashlee Lupchinsky, a senior at SHU, finds the program to be very rewarding and beneficial. “After viewing the program, I was able to use the library much quicker and easier. College is a busy time, so saving a few minutes here and there really helps.”

A Supportive Staff
Helene Ciarochi, a Reeves employee, said that, “We don’t all wear glasses and have buns in our hair.” Often times this description is the stereotypical image of a librarian. I promise while receiving a tour, I did not see any buns. The library staff should not be fear, but instead celebrated because it is their aim to make the library available to you the students. Reeves Memorial Library employs 7 staff members, 25 work studies, and a varied number of interns. All of these people work in the library because they want to, and they want to help you. Pietrala said, “Librarians are always happy to assist anyone who needs it!”

The purpose of having a library on campus is to help the students. It is my advice to take advantage of this help. I hope I was able to shed some light on what makes Reeves a critical part of your college life.
