Although I was unable to open the link that was posted, I do agree that the essay on a college application is very important. As an Admissions counselor at SHU, I take a holistic approach when evaluating an application. Reading an essay helps me learn a lot more about a student than just their transcript. It really makes the whole process more personal. Sometimes a student's grades will be great for the most part but they have one really bad year. Often, in those situations, I learn through the essay that their parents got divorced that year or there was a death in the family. In that case, I can understand why they had such a bad year. Or maybe a student tells me in an essay about a really cool project they did or extensive travel they have done. That, to me, is impressive and shows ambition and potential. The point is, we really do read those essays and sometimes that is all we have to put an identity to a transcript full of grades. Aside from the essay, I also feel that coming in for a personal interview is just as important. Once you meet your counselor, you will feel much more comfortable calling or e-mailing if you have questions or need help. You also have a familiar face waiting for you at orientation, which makes the first part of the day a bit more comfortable. Getting accepted to college is not just about filling out a transcript and hoping for the best. Get to know the counselor you are working with and start a relationship. And, the best way to start is by telling us who you are in your essay!
