Baby boom…boomers…boomletters…
Within recent years we have heard a number of statistics revolving around the infamous baby boomer generation. They have always been one of those generations that have been of interest; being that they were born during a period of increased birth rates during a time of an economic high (1946-1964).
Recently I saw on the Today Show a segment on “Sexy and 60”. So being a baby boomer automatically classifies you as sexy…if I were only 40 years older! Anyway…
To solidify my references to the baby boomers, I have recently read an article titled Colleges Prepare for Enrollment Decline. It is claiming that colleges and universities are preparing for a decline in enrollment after the last of the “baby boomletters” reach college…by 2009. Mind you, that is only 3 years away.
So these “baby boomletters” are a result of the baby boomers having children…I am guessing. So this last influx of students for 2009 will be the last HUGE pool of students for the Admissions recruiting world to pull from? Hmm….
It states in the article that Pennsylvania, in particular will expect a 10% decline in enrollment. New Jersey, on the other hand, is only expected to see a 2% decline due to the rise in Latino and Asian student population.
It seems as though news outlets are just reporting this topic, BUT colleges and universities have been prepared and taking the appropriate measures to be ready for this dramatic/not so dramatic change in higher education.
Along with Chestnut Hill College (PA), Drexel University (PA) and St. Joseph’s University; Seton Hill University is also taking the necessary measures to embrace this economic change with open arms. This includes adopting new academic programs, and strategizing new efforts in recruiting. Ex: when Seton Hill became a university in 2002, this was in efforts to appeal to both men and women and to also be competitive among other colleges and universities across the nation. With the status change paired with the “boomletters”, we have seen a gradual increase in student population within the last few years.
Keep watching!
