Podcast 5 for American Lit had a very unique approach to a very famous scene in Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. Although the scene on the platform with Hester, Pearl, and Dimmesdale is supposed to be viewed as a negative scene with a sense of growing evil, I feel as though the dysfunctional family should be praised for their attempt at getting together. Little Pearl deserves the most praise, because she was able to maintain a positive attitude and her individuality even though her mother was being held back by the rest of the world. Refer to my earlier post about Pearl and her strange attitude - "Little Girls - Sugar, Spice, and Everything Naughty" - and Valerie Susa's rather timely and appropriate response that helped me to see the light.
