Hester accepts to throw away the A as a symbol of the wait lifted off her shoulder, but I believe Pearl wants it back, because the A is all she knows her mother as. Her mother who has accepted her sin, and the placement it has put on her in society, is the mother she expects to see. It is ultimately the mother she loves.
