The adventure was over the top and well worth it for Tom. I could compare Tom to other rich people in society, though he has a larger imagination, he is a young man with to much power. People with power tend to feel entitled to doing things and abuse that power. He is rich but he knows that true adventure does not come from money. He sets up elaborate schemes to attain satisfaction, even if that means setting a free slave free and taking a bullet in the leg.

I agree. Because Tom is in power he feels that he can do whatever he pleases... even if it is cruel to other people.
