Touchdown Griffins

November 13, 2003

As many students know, there is big talk on campus about a football team. While working the David Maraniss lecture dinner, I sat with Barb Hinkle, vice president for enrollment services and registrar; Dr. Frank Klapak, professor of communications; Sharon Klapak, assistant professor of communications; Dr. Mike Cary, professor of political science and history; Mrs. Cary, and two sisters of charity. The football topic came up.

Well, looks like Seton Hill will be getting a football team sooner or later. I made a good suggestion to Barb Hinkle, (if you are going to make suggestions, make them to someone who counts) that maybe Seton Hill should look into using Offutt Field for its football games along with Greensburg-Salem.

This would bring the community to the games and allow SHU to have a team without building a field. The problem with housing comes up, but with the money saved by not building a field, a residents hall can without a doubt go up. If Seton Hill were to share the field with Greensburg Salem, it could save money, and share the responsibility of the field with the HS (which is of benefit to the HS!). I am sure that we would have to integrate the scoreboards and such, but that is minimal cost to putting up a field.

Seton Hill is definately convinced that a football team will bring in money all the way around, but also that the football team will never be a competitive one. It will be for students who enjoy the game, not the ones who are headed for NFL glory.

What does everyone think about this?

I think it's just one more thing that'll make me never want to donate money to the school. It (meaning the players themselves) would probably just trash the campus. ::sigh:: I'm not anti-change, but only when it's a change for the better.

I agree with both you and Donna, Brian. I am just going to be upset that i'm actually going to pay for something like a football field. So, good call about suggesting Offutt Field to Barb Hinkle. It would make a lot of sense to get the community to join in with the Seton Hill fun we're having. Right?

plus it would save a lot more money. It's all about the money, now, isn't it?

My thought: May could not come sooner!!!! Thank God we'll be gone.

I have never been a big football fan. At all. In marching band, I was there because I loved to play my trombone and hang out with my friends in band. When I was Drum Major in my senior year, I had to learn the 4 downs thing so I could know when to play the little blurbs of music. I don't know much about it, nor do I care to.

I'm not looking forward to the fact that SHU wants a football team. *shudder* More pigish jocks to bring alcohol onto campus. yay... *gag*

I think a football team would be a great idea. I know that it means that more jerks...um...im mean jocks are going to be on campus but i think sports bring a school together and maybe then they will think about a marching band and maybe that will make more people happy because more people get to participate.

I think it is a good idea to share with Greensburg Salem, the basketball team shares some of its home games with Jeanette high school. This will save a lot of money, and we are running out of room around campus, and don't need to crowd it up anymore.

I orginally came here because of the small class sizes.. half of my classes have 20-30 people..
