You SHOULD feel safe driving in SW PA

May 18, 2004

Since the blogs have been up and down, I've been waiting to post this one.

Friday morning I was driving to work, when I hear from Ryan Aster, the traffic guy on the newly named B93-7, "a bus seems to be blocking traffic this morning. " There was, however, no need to worry because this bus which was transporting correctional inmates, wasn't actually blocking the traffic. It was the police surrounding the bus which were taking up a lane of traffic. Just as he says this, I see flashing lights going the opposite direction (from Latrobe towards Pittsburgh) and all I could think of was that he was going to join the scene.

The people in Pittsburgh will be safe ... to heck with us suburbians ...

On my ride home that day, I followed this incredibly slow person down Laurel Mountain. I get to the light in Ligoneir and this person is flipping a screwdriver over and over with one hand while smoking what appeared to be a joint and driving with the other. ... did I ever feel safe knowing that I wanted to pass him without him chucking that screwdriver at me.

Then to top it all off, just when I thought that I couldn't feel safe driving Route 30, on Monday, yesterday, I am going rather speedily down 219 then up and over the mountain. I get to Latrobe and I am just 2 cars behind a motorcycle. This wasn't just any motorcycle, it was royal blue with black engine parts. The man was wearing a cape! It was Batman! Riding behind the caped crusader I knew I could feel safe on my ride home. Just then he turned at the light and was gone :(

Now, while driving home, I will always think of the masked man with the cape. Hoping someday to see the bat symbol in the sky.
