Rating challenge doesn't make sense

June 16, 2004

Guardian Unlimited Film | News | Fahrenheit 9/11 distributors to challenge R rating

Why does it matter if this movie gets a PG-13 rating or not. Rated R seems appropriate, since the apparent goal of the movie is to rip George W. apart.

I don't understand what the big push is about. From what I can tell, the movie is not meant to make money, but to influence the public view of the current president and how their votes should go in the upcoming election. Unless there is an amendment that I don't know about, you have to be 18 to vote and 17 to see a rated R movie. I'd say leave it rated R and leave it be.

Just because you have to be 18 to vote doesn't mean that you should have to be 18 to start hearing the political dialogue in this country. I say PG-13.

But wouldn't the protest for a lower rating cause the release to be pushed back?

It may just be better to leave it be and let the youngsters sneak in if they are interested in politics. It doesn't exactly seem like a "let's pack up the kids in the minivan and go watch this feel good movie" kind of movie.
