Monkey Business 101: Primates would make realistic college students
August 18, 2004
Isn't it funny how that is the epitome of a college student.
Both monkeys and humans tend to procrastinate when they know they have to do more work before getting a reward, and then work harder as a deadline looms.
When I visited SUNY Oswego for a tour before deciding on a college, the tour guide explained to the group the 3 C's of college life; coffee, candy and cigarettes. Needless to say I didn't go there for my degree, but she forgot a very inportant part to college life. Procrastination.
Procrastination would be one of the largest factors in a college students life. The thoughts always seem to cross one's mind particularly on a Thursday night, 'Oh that paper isn't due until Monday, I'll do it Sunday.'
According to the article, Gene therapy turns lazy monkeys into workaholics, "The researchers hope the study will help them to understand some mental disorders." In reality I think they are looking to understand the mind of a college student ... or suggesting that every college student has a mental disorder. One or the other.
Isn't it ironic how college students can be compared to monkeys at so many levels?

As far as procrastination goes... it's true. Just look at how many times we went to Eat 'N Park to "do homework." But the concept of gene therapy to make lazy college students into workaholics (if that's the directiong the monkey business would take) is a little too "Stepford Wives" for me.
