Weekend woes: 'Tips' for tips

August 30, 2004

As many of you know, I work at Clearwaterz in Greensburg, PA. I am currently a beertender - meaning I sell beer out of a beer cart. I really like my job and the customers, but sometimes I wonder if spending my weekend nights working at a bar is really worth the time. Because honestly, the money is just okay, but I do really like doing it.

Now, this thought is probably subconciously provoked by the fact that college is coming back into session and some of my younger college friends will be coming of age shortly and will be asking if I will be able to join them in their celebration festivities. Working every Friday and Saturday night won't allow me to spend time with my friends and that is kinda disappointing.

What exactly would make it more worth it was if I was making enough money to have fun, work and be able to buy a round of drinks for my friends, but woefully, the money just isn't there for that. Ironically while browsing around other people's blogs, I ventured upon this post by someone named Eddie, Tip for a Day. This post refers to a CNN article about how to up your tips in the act of serving to customers. Now, I realize that I am not exactly a waiter, so I don't get a chance to do many of the things suggested, but it got me to thinking if there was anything I could do. Smile, let them know what I offer, make quick easy small talk, thank the customer.

I know there are some waitresses out there in our little blogosphere, and maybe a bartender or two. Anyone find any of these tips to be helpful or know of any tips that may help me out? If you do, I'll have to try a few this weekend and see how it works out.
