Shirt & Tie
October 07, 2004
Yesterday and today, due to some special visitors at work, I've had to dress up with shirtand tie. Here is a rundown of how I am feeling today:
I feel more professional for obvious reasons. Having to come to work and look important makes one feel as though their position really means something and that they work they are doing is valued.
I feel like I've gotten a lot accomplished. Though I probably haven't gotten any more done than normal, and the days have gone rather slow, I feel like I've accomplished a lot of work on the content management system. We haven't had the ability to goof off. Not that we roll our office chairs up and down the walkways on any other day, but the lack of laughter and fun time just isn't in the air these past two days. The atmosphere is more tense and everyone is hard ot work, or looking like it.
I feel old. I feel like I've found the job that I could never picture myself in. I always pictured myself working in a fun office, like in 40 Days and 40 Nights as opposed to the dull working environment of Office Space. Old in the sense that I am grown up and being responsible and making money. Luckily my co-workers average age is probably 30 so it isn't truly an old person atmosphere. I feel jealous (not related to the shirt and tie). Jealous of college students who get to skip class and run around outside during the last few days of sunshine before the snow hits in a couple of weeks.
Moral of the story: Enjoy college. Shirt and tie may make you feel good about your future, but it also makes you complain about hippity-hop musak and all the slang that just isn't cool to use in the real world.

As an employee in a relatively fun office, I know what you mean. The managers here are mainly like Office Space, but the eployees are all Peter. We're even allowed jeans, t-shirts, and flip flops every day if we want.
But I think one perk of being out of college that you missed is the enormous amount of free time. Sure, I had time in college to play a game of frisbee at 2 in the afternoon. But now, I am guaranteed all my evenings and weekends free. No homework, research in the library, or classes. I think it's a fair trade.

True. But 10 or 11 hour days and going to bed early isn't exactly the dream lifestyle. I enjoyed college more. Perhaps it was the freedom. To me, working give you less flexibility with your lifestyle.
