Brittney's Portfolio

Portfolio 1 (100pts) -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)

My name is Brittney Aller and I am a Freshman and commuter at Setonhill University. I am majoring in English Literature and I am also going to be certified in Elementary and Special Education. This is my first semester blogging, which has also made this semester quite difficult.

Coverage

One of the assignments that I liked doing for class was the blank verse poetry. After Professor jerz assistance in helping me actually understand poetry, iambic Pentameter and blank verse I thought that I was clever enough to come up with oa poem that I really enjoy. it is about my Ex 1-4c: A Clever Blank-Verse Entry on Your Blog (10pts) -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)">daughter so check it out.

One of the stories that I enjoyed reading this semester was How To Build a Fire. I found the story to be interesting and somewhat emotional. In many ways I though that I wanted to cry for the man and his dog but realized that If Only he Would of Listened then he wouldn't of had to die.

Another story that I also liked reading was The Machine Stops. This story was different than any other ones that I have read and I found it to be a bit scary. It made me realize how the future might be in a hundred or so years when I am long gone.

The other Coverage selections that I chose were poetry selections. I am not really good at analyzing poems but I really enjoyed reading them in class. The Emily Dickinson poem, Death was an easy and pleasant poem to read. Some of the other poems that we had to read and discuss for class were the poems called Turtle, Swing and Tree. These poems were easy and enjoyable to read because they made you feel like you were a little child again. I think that Professor jerz and the class in general has helped me understand poetry a lot better.
* Emily Dickinson *
* Children Poems *

Our introductory to Literature class also had to read Antony and Cleoptra by William Shakespeare. This reading was somtimes confusing but none the less enjoyable like everything else. I believe that my blogging on the first few acts and the second few acts were some of the best blogging that I have done all year.
ACTS I and II
ACTS III-IV

Depth

I believed that the blog that I did on Coleridge's The Raven was in depth. I explained why certian things stood as symbols.

Another blog was the ones that I did on Antony and Cleopatra.. I believe that I did a good job trying to explain the acts and what I thought was happening.

Interaction

Throughout the blogging process not too many people commented on my blog but i was lucky to have some that actually cared about what I said and I am grateful for those.
Thanks you everyone that did!!
When I blogged about the Second Raven story, Denamarie decided to right about how she felt.

Erin was kind enough to tell me her feelings and how she liked the little child poems that we read.

I also commented on peoples blogs. Fr instance I commented on Kevins 'Keep It Simple and Natural'. i liked the way that he thought and how he symbolized some of the things in the poem.

I also commented on Amandas blog for Death Be Not Proud.. because she really helped me understand that the person in this poem was not afraid of death but waiting to go peacefully.

I also commented on Andies blog of Let Me Not to the Marriage of True Minds. In Andies blog he showed how he thought true love. He said that True Love can within stand challenges. I explained about my personal life and also agreed with him.

I also chose to comment on Andies blog for the Raven. I really liked how he was opinionated and how Elyse took the opinion and story onto a different level. On this blog I had to almost agree with Andie.

Unfortunately my blog only sparked a converstaion between myself and one other person.

Timeliness

I wrote my Blog for Antony and Cleopatra ACTS III to IV after class was ended. Even though we really didnt get a whole lot of time to discuss it in class, we had an exam which brought up the questions of that character, Cleopatra. Check out my blog to see how I thought the rest of the play was.

Xenoblogging

I was the first to comment on Andies blog for, Let Me not to The marriage of trueMinds. Unfortunately it didn't spark a converstaion between anyone else.

Wildcard

Ah.. blogging takes up so much time and so much energy. Even though I think that sometimes we shouldn't have to blog or maybe because I run out of time because I am so busy with other homework, school, kids or work I think that it is a good idea. It helps to get our mids motivated and prepared for what we are going to do the next day. Just remember that this is my FIRSt time blogging and my First time doing a portflio.. Be Gentle!!

Antony and Cleopatra (Acts III-V) -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)

Cleopatra and Antony
Acts III-IV

The title definitely foreshadows the ending of the play/story.
Throughout the story we see how selfish Cleopatra and how weak Cleopatra and Antony really are. I didn’t find out like everyone else that Cleopatra and Antony had children which I think is a factor but it really isn’t talked about. Maybe that is why Antony loves her so much… he is in love with Cleopatra because of her power and beauty but when you have children with someone I think that has a big part of it.

The one quote that I didn’t understand in the story was in ACT II SCENE 11

We scorn her most when most she offer blows

I just wondering if anybody could let me know what that means because for some reason that is all I keep on thinking about.

The hatred for Cleopatra is also shown widely throughout the last Acts of the play. She is called a ho and a whore so many times by Caesar and his people. It definitely makes people aware of how they truly felt about Cleopatra and her role as a leader.

I thought that it was really sad when Antony was betrayed by one of his best friends, Enobarbus. When Enobarbus leaves Antony and joins Caesar you have a feeling that Antony was going to be left by him self. Betrayal is such a harsh and rotten thing but you try not to feel so bad for him because throughout the story he betrayed many people that he supposedly loved.

It was also really clear how much Antony loved Cleopatra and how “under her power” he really was. It really backfired on Cleopatra when she sent a messenger to talk to Antony and tell him that she had died right after he yelled at her. Instead of him running back to her and cradling her body he decided to kill himself which wasn’t how I expected him to die.

The other deaths were quite unusual. I was confused about wether or nnot Cleopatra was willing and ready to die. She kept asking if it was going to hurt and etc... well did it really matter if she felt any pain?

I definitely like how Kevin/Denamarie wrote
Understand that love and lust might look the same...be it will give you different results.

I can’t wait to see the play in action

Antony and Cleopatra

Antony and Cleopatra (Acts I & II) -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)

I have really enjoyed reading this play of Antony and Cleopatra and that is probably because with all of the footnotes and all of the help that the book provides to help you understand the play better.

I understand why everyone thinks that Cleopatra and Antony are individually weak characters because they are. Cleopatra relys on Antony to make her feel beautiful and wonderful because she needs to know that he will always love her and will always want her even though he has/had a wife Fulvia and also his new wife Octavia. After she finds out that he remarried she was in a panic and a horrible mood until she realizes that Octavia is nothing compared to her. It is obvious that Cleopatra will always hold a key to Antonys heart basically because of her power and beauty.

I do believe that either Antony does not know what he wants or maybe he just wants it all. I think that he might want everything.. the girls... the queen.. the power. He will always want Cleopatra but he continues to marry and love other women at the same time as Cleopatra and then he marries (Octavia) only to have a better relationship with her brother Caeser and Rome. But in a way I feel bad for Antony because I believe that he is torn and truely does feel emotions toward Fulvia, Cleoptra and Rome. I do think that he would of went to Rome becuase the reason that he went was to show respect and get things back in order but I don't think that he would of married Octavia. If Cleopatra wouldn't of been playing games with him from the beginning. She is constanly saying that she loves him but she doesnt want to marry him and then she send messages wanting and expecting him to do something. For example she tells her messanger to ask him how he is doing and she what he is up to and then if he tells an answer the messanger is suppose to relay something opposite basically for Anotny to understand that he is suppose to go and see her. (But I think that I do that as well.. because when I am mad at someone I say things but then I just expect them to come over or continue to call me.. but Antony isn't a mind reader and basically just does what she says. which is foreshadowing because when Cleopatra sends him a message saying that she is dead the message backfires on her.)
I also think that he has mixed feeling because he definately shows love his first wife Fulvia. When Antony finds out that his wife is dead he says
Forbear me
Theres a great spiri gone!
Thus did I desire it:

This passage definately shows love for his wife then Antony continues to say be gone and he wants to be alone. I think that he also has much love for her when he finds out that she died on his behave. Which shows how much she loved him while he was beraying her.

I just believe that these characters are confused and really dont know what they really want in life. It is going to be interesting to finish reading the play and seeing it in action.

Coleridges..

Hácová, ''Love, Life and Death in Coleridge's Poem 'The Raven''' -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)

I really liked reading this becuase I think that it gave me an even better understanding of the poem.. When I first read the poem I did get the feeling that it was about life and having a family and death and revenge but I don't think that I picked up on all of the symbols that he used. It is so rare and weird but amazing to me that people can write books, poems and movies and have us understand something that we think is great in one way and it completely means something else. For instance this poem, The Raven can be related to the French Revolution and COleridges meanings. And just like I watched the Wizard of Oz and think of someone going to a magical place when it is really about politics.
I still really liked this poem. I like how it was symbolic and how it really shows you how the bird felt and etc.

death be not proud..

Sonnets -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)

So I am having a hard time reading the poem, Death, be not proud. I am not sure if it is the way it is written or if my brain already stopped working.

All I can do is try and for some reason I think that the first line somewhat is saying that people call for death and are either wanting to die, like commit suicide, or they are just really afraid of death and don't want it to come.
In line 9 it says
thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, adn desperate men, adn doust with poison, war, and sickness dwell

I think it is saying that fate can bring death and that the desperate men for death either get sick, are poisoned or are shipped to war.

I really am having a hard time with this one.

Sonnets -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)

Alright.. I don't really understand poems and I do not definately know how to analyse them especially this one written by Shakespeare, Let me not to the marriage of true minds.

Of course, this poem is about true love and how nothing can take true love away. But at the end of the poem he says

If this be error and upon me prov'd,
I never writ, nor no man ever lov'd.

This time he is saying if he was wrong about true love being so wonderful then he never writ such a poem.

He also says
Love is not times fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
within his bending sickle's compass come

I think right here, rosy lips and cheeks are representing a young woman, youth. And that even when time passes, true love will still exist.

Coleridge's The Raven

Coleridge,''The Raven'' -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)<

The raven by Coleridge is about a love for his family, a life that they lived and the death had he had to endure and the revenge that he had on the person that killed his family. It says that he and his 'wife' were so happy having a family then all of a sudden it was taken away because of the manufacturing world. But then the raven goes from being so loving to wanting revenge and death upon the person that cut down 'his' oak tree. The poem was more about egtting revenge over something or someone for hurting the bird.. But I think that it was just a Coincidence. A bird can not make a storm or death happen... but he sure was glad that the person that mudered his family had his life aken away too. And if you think about it many people want the same thing. Lots of people and I think that I would at one point of time.. if someone heaven knows murdered someone close to me.. I would want revenge just like the raven. its normal to hate someone that much that does something so wrong. But when I write on paper or use a wooden pencil I dont think that possibly birds or animals were killed by someone cutting down a tree to manufacture things. It said and cruel to the nature and animal life.

poems and more poems

Poetry Selections -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)

TURTLE by V.L.
This poem is definately targeted toward an audience of a very young age.. Definately something that I would read to my little daughter.. yes I have a daughter.. But, it doesnt involve a lot of thought.. you basically know everything that happened. It one of those poems that you just love to hear.. everything always seems so hard but something this simple is so nice to read every once and a while.

TURTLE by O.N.
I loved this poem too.. It also is wuite simple by not soo juvenile.. yes it says in the poem
the plated decks which practically conceal its sex
I dont really know that much about turtles.. but I never thought of that.. All i can say is that this poem really makes sense.. The shell is the turles protection but it also covers so much of the turtles body that we really dont get a chance to see the 'turtle'. But then he goes on saying how they are fertile.. turtles reproduce like crazy.. so i dont see how that fits.

TREE
I really liked this poem.. it seems as though the author has a sense of humor..(because of the last line). It sounds so pretty and wonderful when someone can take words about nature and turn into beauty which is exactly what she did. This author really had a love for nature and trees and god because they all have a connection in this little poem. I really feel like planting a tree.

SWING
I think that I liked this poem the best.. It is so childish and juvenile. As I read the poem I can picture myself or a little child swinging on a swing. It really leaves something to the imagination.. about a child who can think of so many things to see as he swings on a swing.. I use to love to swing when i was little.. hey i still do.

HAPPY THOUGHT
This poem basically says that it doesnt take a page to make a good poem.. I like the thought that it says the world.. The world is so huge and it holds everything for everyone. It doesnt take a lot to make people happy, well me anyways, and I think that it means that everyone should be happy with what they have.. as happy as kings.

poetry- spring and fall

Poetry Selections -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)

This was a hard poem for me to understand.. I understand that Margaret is grieving because the seasons are changing.. at least that is what I can read out of the poem.

AS the heart grows older
it will come to such sights colder

I believe that this means that as you grow older.. you will face things that are hard and possibly sad.

But the end kind of leaves me speechles.. I am just confused..

Poetry- Disillusionment of ten oclock

Poetry Selections -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)

I am not sure if I can interpret this poem into what it really means even though many people can interpret them in many different ways. The only thing I understand from this poem is that the house is being haunted by just people in white:

The houses are haunted
by white night gowns
none are green
...

And the only thing that the people in the house are going to dream about is an old sailor that is drunk and asleep in his boots..

Anyone can help me understand this poem better.. if you can.

Poetry selections

Poetry Selections -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)

Death by Emily Dickinson
This was the only poem that I believe I knew what was going on. I am not a great reader of poems and I often have a hard time determining what was happening.. But this is how I interpreted the poem..

Because I could not stop for death,
He kindly stopped for me:
The carriage held but just ourselves
And immortality.

I interpreted this as death was the driver of the carriage.. and she used kindly which makes me think that she was ready for it and not afraid to get into the carriage with death.

We slowly drove, he knew no haste,
And i had put away
My labor and my leisure too
For his civility.

It means that she was not in a hurry for death and neither was death. But that her labor and her leisure time were nothing now and that she is stopping all of that for death.

In stanzas 9 through twelve it talks about first the children, then being more of an adult than death.. It is just letting her see the stages of life.

WE paused before the house that seemed
a swelling in the ground
the roof was scarely visible
the cornice but a mound.

She finally arrived to the grave site and it is time for death.

the mchine stops

Forster, ''The Machine Stops'' (online) -- Jerz: Intro to Literary Study (EL150)

The machine Stops which is written by E.M. Forster is quite scary. It makes the reader think about what might happen in the future. Today mostly everything is some type of a machine.. we have cell phones, computers, machines in factories that are one day going to take over everyones job.. we have spaceships...cars..planes.. and etc..
And the world knows that these inventions arent going to be the last. Everyone laughes at the fact that people say one day we will have flying cars.. and people will be able to vacation in space but I truely believe that.. I think that technology can reuin the world just like it did in The machine stops..
One passage from the story.. Then she generated the light and the sight of her room flooded with radiance...there were buttons adn switches for everything- buttons to call for food, music, clothing, hot bth, cold bath, literature button etc.. Even though this could be nice because today I find People in general to be very lazy.. it almost makes me want to do everything myself..
Even though its silly i relly hope the world doesnt come to this
