Wireless wonders

Well, after spending 3 days trying to configure my laptop to use SHU's wireless network, I finally figured it out. I can connect freely, at last!

Or can I?

I've spent a fair amount of time trekking back and forth across campus, trying to locate the best spots for access to the wireless network, and it seems to me like the signals are incredibly weak throughout most of the school, both inside and outdoors.

I have managed to find at least one good access point -- the computer lab on the 3rd floor of Maura Hall. But access from a SHU computer lab is sorta pointless.

I heard once that Reeves Library is supposed to be a great place for access to the wireless network, but for some reason I have found that the signal there is usually weak and prone to cutting me off.

::Sigh::

Well, hopefully the CIT Department will improve the network access points soon. If anyone knows of some good spots I might have missed, please let me know.

Hi Below Zero,

Thank you for posting this information and for going through the effort to configure your laptop. Step-by-step configuration instructions are now available on the Seton Hill Help Network, SHU-Help, which you can see from Reeves.

Thank you also for letting us know how we can make wireless even better. For example, we would like to know where students want wireless. Where are the ideal locations for wireless access that aren't currently covered? Please advise.

Also, check back in Reeves. There is strong signal throughout upper and lower floors. The outdoor lawn area between Reeves and Sullivan is completely covered and signal extends up to the lawn in front of Brownlee. Do let us know if you find other areas that have coverage.

For others who haven't configured wireless, here are the instructions:

http://www.setonhill.edu/academics/index.cfm?ACID=118&T1=352

Again, these instructions are also available via the wireless help network in Reeves: SHU-Help

The one remaining issue is with a bug in the Intel Centrino driver that affects powersaving. You'll need to have powersaving mode off to connect. This problem will be resolved in the next few weeks.

Instructions for configuring powersave mode are also on the help network.

Thank you,
CIT/Hobnob
