Barntleby

I thought the nicknames he had for his employees were rather strange, and sounded somewhat insulting. " I had two persons as copyists in my employment, and a promising lad as an office-boy. First, Turkey: second, Nippers; third Ginger Nut." He said that the names were agreed upon and were most expressive of them. I couldn't wait to continue to find out if they further explained the nicknames.

The Yellow WallPaper

I Liked this story. When I first started reading it I couldn't understand why he wouldn't change the wallpaper. He said if he did, she would be bothered by something else. She starts to think that he and Jennie are acting weird, and that perhaps it is the wallpaper.
"I have watched John when he did not now I was looking, and come into the room suddenly on the most innocent excuses, and I've caught him several times looking at the paper." She doesn't want anyone but herself finding the pattern. The wallpaper seems to be making her more paronoid.

Chapters 22-24

In Chapter 22, when the procession passed by Pearl and Hester, pearl looks at Hester and asks, " Mother, was that the same minister that kissed me by the brook?" I think that this passage is the start that something of great importance is about to happen. It sets up the whole scene.

Chapter 14

In Chapter 14...
"I hear good tidings of you on all hands! No longer than yester-eve, a magistrate, a wise and godly man, was discoursing of your affairs, Mistress Hester, and whispered me that there had been question of whether or no, with safety to the common weal, yonder scarlet letter may be taken off your bossom."
What I find interesting is that it has become everybodies business of what Hester should do or shouldn't do. When I first read this, I thought the physician was being kind to Hester, but as I continued reading it, I realized that he was being cruel.

Wednesdays class

What I found interesting was how Governor Bellingham was impressed with Pearl's finery when he saw her for the first time. He even
stated that he had seen such finery years. Then when they see that she is Hester's child, they state that " she needs to be taken out of thy charge, and clad soberly, and disciplined strictly, and instructed in the truths of heaven and earth? What canst thou do for this child, in this kind" As if clothes can make you a sinner.
I also thought that shows Hester's strength when she tells them that Pearl can learn from her to be wiser and better. I like that Hester never backs down. She stands her ground no matter what.

I feel that Hester is a better person than any of the townspeople. She is charitable, eventhough no one is really charitable to her.
She is a strong woman who I feel should be admired.

Second Blog entry

"She took the baby on her arm, and, with a burning blush, and yet a haughty smile, and a glance that would not be abashed, looked around at her townspeople and neighbours. On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidary and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A. ( The Scarlet Letter, page 46 ).
I found this passage interesting. The townspeople were expecting to find her diminished by shame, but she emerged haughty and almost proud. She did not allow them the satisfaction that they wanted.
