News Writing (EL 227)

Ex 0-1: Entertainment/Sports Writing

300 words. Optional. Adds up to two points to your lowest exercise grade. Write a review of the SHU production of Fuddy Meers (opening Oct 7), OR write a story on a sporting event at SHU the previous weekend. Go beyond simple summary, and include interviews with appropriate local figures. (For example, Fuddy Meers is a comedy about someone with a mental disorder. You might contact someone at SHU who works with mental disorders.) When you submit your article, include a printout of a recent professional article on the same topic (theatre review, sports news), and a brief note on ways in which an arts review differs from an English lit paper, or ways in which a sports news story differs from a hard news story.

Dr. Jerz,
I'm going to see the play Thursday night. Will you still except this assignment on Friday?

Posted by: Katie Lambert at October 10, 2005 01:35 PM

I was planning on seeing it thursday as well. What should I do?

Posted by: Andy LoNigro at October 10, 2005 07:52 PM

I was wondering if I did decide to do the article, If I would be able to do it on the recent girls volleyball game at St. Vincent last week?

Posted by: Rachel Prichard at October 10, 2005 08:21 PM

I, too, may not be able to see the play until the middle of the week...so I guess I'm just waiting for the answer for these questions because I'm interested in doing this assignment (if possible)as well.

I have to say I'd like to do this assignment, too, and I probably wouldn't be able to see Fuddy Meers until later in the week, either.

Okay, I'll accept it Friday, but that means you've got a lot of work due Friday. If I were you, I wouldn't leave all three assignments until Thursday night.

Rachel, what day was that game? If you attended it, I'll consider it.

Erin, if you can show me what the problem is, maybe I can help.

Posted by: Dennis G. Jerz at October 12, 2005 12:07 AM

Erin, on your quip about mental disorders... it's sometimes useful to attend a play (or movie, or other event) with an expert in the field, and then report on the expert's reaction. So if you see a psychology professor in the audience, or you know one who's seen the play, that might be a good source.

Dr. Jerz,
I am having trouble trying to post a comment on Jenna O'Brocto's blog. I have tried about 4 times and it doesn't show up. I had similar trouble the other day with Nancy's blog when I first tried to post, but then it worked the second time. But on Jenna's it just doesn't work for some reason. (In case you need to know it is her blog on Infotainment)

In order to prevent the blogs from being flooded with spam, I've turned on a feature that holds most comments for moderation. Ideally, I'd like you all to moderate your own comments, but I do go into the system two or three times a day and approve all the backlogged comments (if they are course related). It's not a perfect solution, but if I let all comments go without any checks, we'd be flooded with commercial messages that would drown out the course content.

Almost half a million unwanted junk comments have been blocked since I added the latest spam-blocking tool last semester.
