O'Connor, "Good Country People" -- Jerz: EL150 (Intro to Literary Study)
Reflection Paper for "Good Country People"
It is interesting that this story has a twist that is unexpected until the end. After reading Ellen’s blog entry I noticed that instead of the boy tricking her she thought she would trick him. I was thinking about the boy tricking her and getting her leg. It is true that Hulga thinks about seducing the boy the night before. As the story continued, I worried about her instead of the boy. It is also true that, “the clever ploy failed and now country boys cannot be begged.” This is an interesting connection with the story by going back and forth from each character.
Comment - Poem:
A life of deception, ignorance and bliss,
Wooing women with sweet talk and a kiss;
That’s where this man called pointer was heading,
With a bible in his hand but never a wedding.
