Taking Back Saturday-- Pride Style!
I am so excited... On June 18th, there will be people uniting under one banner to celebrate the struggles, the accomplishments, and the spirit of the LGTB experience. Pittsburgh City Council proclaimed Pride Month June for the City of Pittsburgh. This is a step in the long road to sexual equality for gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. (Recall PA's legislations on equal rights for the LGTB community).
The theme will be "Equal Rights, No More, No Less." This is a big step up from the vile and overtly discriminatory comparison between homosexuality and "bigamy, polygamy, incest, and adultery." I charge everyone reading this blog entry to be active in supporting equal rights for everyone.
Want to make a difference? I'm still looking for people interested in starting up a GSA this year. If you're curious to see what it's about or are thinking about joining, e-mail me at e_reynold@yahoo.com.

E- I’m looking forward to it too. I’m glad to be finally out of the damned closet. Glad that PGH has Pride and the GLCC. It totally rocks my socks.
It seems like there will be more coverage than the last few years. I was looking on GLCC PGH site, they changed the route to be more visible, or so it seems to me. I’d imagine, with those changes and any amount of luck, there’ll be a good bit of press coverage.
I was thinking about your statement, “laws should not be based on traditions.” I probably shouldn’t bring my religion in on it, but that’s one of the Buddha’s teachings. Or, well, your statement can easily be drawn from one of his teachings: To deny traditions, traditional thought, and the thoughts of the family for rational, logical choices and way of life.
If Christianity claims compassion and loving thy neighbor as thyself; Is it truly compassionate to deny marriage and equal rights to gays and lesbians? I believe I do not have to make any further argument. I think this issue is something to Rant about in my blog.
Anyhoo, to rap it up. There’s a long and winding road ahead, but maybe in time, good effort, and change, there will be equality.

One of the things I see wrong with the conservative view of marriage is it’s too sex-based. Who cares who you are sleeping with? If you’re in love, why should it matter? I agree that laws should not be based on traditions. America had a tradition of slavery… does that make it right?
I hope this event at least raises awareness. My guess is that it will receive a good amount of coverage at least at the local level. Last year’s event was covered by the Post-Gazette. Check this link out: Pridefest ‘04

It is surprising how many people see pedophilia as a synonym for homosexuality. Surprising, and annoying.
The arguement against gay-marriage that I see most often, is that it’s against the American tradition. I always thought of tradition to be a personal thing - not part of our laws. Same as marriage, it’s personal. I look forward to the day when marriage isn’t such a huge, national issue.
Do you think this event will receive very much media attention?
