Avoiding Libel
The AP Stylebook has a wealth of information on avoiding libel charges. Even if your article is accurate, you can be charged with libel. Some pitfalls to look out for:
- Truth of your sources: are your sources telling the truth about someone? Check.
- Libelous nature of your quotes: Is someone saying something that can hurt another person's career and reputation?
- Is someone's privacy being violated? Remember to report only on matters of public concern.
If you get accused of libel even though you had no malicious intentions, don't panic. Remember, the plaintiff must prove that you had malicious intentions, negligent actions, and false accusations.
Though most of the language of the section seemed like a lawyer was talking to me, I was able to pick out bits and pieces of truly useful information.
