Machinal

Treadwell, Machinal (Scenes 1-5) -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

I couldn't help but notice the similarity between Machinal and other short stories/plays that I have read in the past. It seems like the storyline was similar in stories/plays such as: A Doll's House,Th Yellow Wallpaper, The Importance of Being Earnest and so on. They were focused on either the unhappiness of the wife which was caused by the husband or the storyline was about a women marrying a man for the wrong reasons. "Machinal" was a play that I read before and I didn't particularly like. I think that I am sick of reading stories and plays that focus on an unhappy marriage. What did these charcters think would happy when they marriend the men whom the didn't love? At this point, after reading stories with such similar storylines I have no sympathy for the wives and whatever unhappiness that they did have was cause by themselves.

I also read this play in a previous class. I agree with you. I'm kind of sick of people saying all this stuff on how men treat women horribly, women are putting themselves in this position. Women can be at fault too!
