From Notes on the State of Virginia

I really wasn't sure what my agenda item should be for this story. It's about Thomas Jefferson being a racist. I guess my agenda item is that Jefferson lived a long time ago and he was a racist. After all these years haven't people learned we are all equal? After all these years and all the events that have taken place in the world, why haven't people realized their fault in being a racist and to let the world and its people be at peace?

I agree with you, why can't people just move one and forget about what happend 50 some years ago. People should live in the present and quit living in the past.

I think during that time everyone was racist and for Jefferson to make those comments the majority of the people there agreed with him. I think though this essay can fuel people now to say well look our former president was a racist so I can be too.

I think you have to first consider the time period. At the time people still owned slaves and Jefferson was trying to reach out to the majority of the people. I really don't think people can move on because it was so terrible making people into slaves and demeaning their people. We can't just forget about the Holocaust can we? if you don't remember and learn from history then it will repeat itself.

Back then, owning slaves was the things to do. Just like getting your tounge pierced now is. It was practically nothing to them and they thought nothing of it, because that was how they were brought up, that it was ok to have slaves.

I do think it is a shame that people in today's society can't get over racial issues. However, people act like they are raised. Instead of opening up and letting their child determine for themselves what views on race they want to take, they tell their child not to like people of a certain color. Its sad, but true.
