Greensburg Fire Department

Fire Safety and Greensburg

The Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department was established on January 12, 1891, which included Hose Company #2 and Truck Company #2.  Before this in 1848, the only components of the fire department consisted of the Pat Lyon (which is presently owned by Hose Company #3) and 2 fire companies.  The first major fire that the companies were involved in fighting was the "GREAT" for in Pittsburgh in 1845.  During the early 1900's more hose companies were established as the city of Greensburg grew.  With the development of each company, the wives of the firefighters wanted to show support for the departments by establishing the Women's Auxiliaries.  Money was raised to support the fire companies and this promoted the growth with more volunteers and more equipment.

To the present day, Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department consists of 350 men and women.  The companies have not only grown, but have ramified into Dive and Bloodhound teams.

Police Department History

In 1888, Greensburg employed its first police officer, Joseph Boomer.  Shortly after, John Walthour, a night patrolman was hired, along with Jonathan Kistler and William F. Bollinger, who made up Greensburg's first police force.

In 1894, Bunker Hill Borough consolidated with Greensburg and the police force was increased.

"By the 1940's, the city had over 1600 residents and a 19 man police force lead by Chief Walter Hutchinson."  A new police headquarters was established in 1955on 416 South Main Street, and by 1957, the department grew to 27 officers.

Today, the Greensburg Police Department is lead by Chief of Police, Walter Lyons, and continues to serve the community, investigating 11,626 incidents in 2003.
