Reading chapters 10 - 15 of the Scarlet Letter for a class discussion was very interesting. In these chapter we discover that Mr. Dimmesdale is the father of Pearl. While standing on the platform that Hester and Pearl once stood, he can no longer hold in his secret fatherhood. However only they and Roger Chillingworth discover it. This shows that he is human and wants to take care of his responsabilities, which is very courageous because he could be killed for his crime of adultary. We also learn that Hester wants Roger Chillingworth to allow Mr. Dimmesdale to tell the secret to everyone so it does not kill him any longer. Roger Chillingworth does not want this to happen because Mr. Dimmesdale has no letter so he feels that holding it in and not telling anyone is a suitable sentence. Hester believes that Roger Chillingworth is becoming more like the devil and wishes to cause harm to people than help them. We also see a different side of Hester. She becomes to be loved and appreciated by the town that shunned her from their community. I find this relieving because it tells me that they are forgiving her for her mistake and allowing her to move on with her life instead of consistantly harrassing her of something that happened in the past. I enjoy the fact that they say the letter A stands for Able, which means that Hester is able to do anything that is put in front of her. She comes to a point however where she wants to let Pearl know of her past, but fears that she is not yet mature enough to handle it. I'm not sure I agree with that because a child had a right to know what happened to her mother and what she went throught and is going throught for her.
Hey this is all new to me (hence the title), but I found that Amanda's Guidelines are very helpful and make blogging very easy to do! THANKS!
