Notes on the State of VIrginia

Agenda Item: Do you think that Thomas Jefferson knew that the slaves and their freedom would be limited after he made his proposal? If yes, do you think that he could have done something to make this easier on them? Like what?

I think that he was for slavery. The only reason he tried to get ride of slavery was because he was the president of the U.S.

Jefferson opposed slavery as clearly shown in his 1787 "Notes on the State of Virginia", Query 18. This was approx. 14 years before he was president.

In 1779 he proposed a law that would have freed the slaves, and again in Congress 1784, which came within one vote of passage.

I think he did not free his own due to the fact that they would have been set loose in a world hostile to them and the idea.
