Express Your Beliefs at SHU

At Seton Hill University students are encouraged to express their many varying political and personal beliefs.  In order to aid in every student's personal expression there are a number of clubs which students can join: College Democrats, College Republicans, the Gay-Straight Alliance, the Right to Life club, the Bible Study club and the Feminist Collective.

As a member of your club of choice you can sponsor events on campus such as a dance or even hold a fundraising event raising money for your club or an organization or charity which shares similar views with your club.  There's no limit to what you can do as a member or officer of these clubs; the more creative and dedicated you and your group members are the more of an impact your club can have at SHU.

The right to express one's own personal views is a right not shared by everyone and I urge anyone, especially a college student on the journey of establishing his or her own individual identity and belief system to take advantage of this opportunity.  Joining clubs is a great way to make friends who share the same goals, interests and beliefs as you do.  I am a member of the College Democrats, Feminist Collective and president of the Gay Straight Alliance; I have enjoyed my involvement with all of these clubs and strongly encourage anyone to exercise their rights to both speak and express themselves freely and join up with a cause that you believe in.

For my blogs this time around I decided to focus on politics-surprise!  I covered the MidTerm elections and some of the more eye brow raising/spasm inducing candidates the Republicans especially the Tea Partiers have cruelly thrust upon us.  As always I tried to tie humor into my posts while arguing my points.  I'm going to prepare you though before you read some of these, some of the information is utterly insane; the three candidates I covered can be described as a racist homophobe whose hobbies include beastiality videos, a crazy born again Chrisitian who who dabbled in witchcraft and satanism and finally a Kentucky senator who challenges the Civil Rights Act and pays for his campaign with donations from Neo Nazis.  Man, no body does crazy like the Republicans.

Interaction:

The following link is a comment I made on DJ Beckage's page wherein we discussed the stresses of college.

This one I'm particularly proud of.  BethAnne voiced her misery over the fact that she's constantly compared to lesbians because she plays softball.  I couldn't imagine the depth of her pain so I decided to show both she and the too often discriminated Softball Community my support with this comment.

Depth:

I feel that the following posts show the depth I went into on several topics.

This post covers Rand Paul's sketchy campaign funding and views on segregation and discrimination.

This post covers Christine O'Donnell and her relentless lunacy.

How is this not homophobic?

Discussion:

Unfortunately I do not have any comments to begin a discussion but I have a feeling that BethAnne may begin one soon.  Tehehe hahaha

In my earlier posts I've mentioned Christine O'Donnell and Carl Paladino of Delaware and New York respectively.  Thankfully the two of these fools lost in their efforts to become elected to office but unfortunately this post is in regard to a tea party candidate who did in fact win.  The candidate that I'm speaking of is Rand Paul the current Senator of Kentucky and son of Ron Paul.

Recently, Paul made a statement regarding the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  He claimed that he did in fact agree that the government should be involved with the prevention of institutional racism such as segregated schools, buses etc but he did say he had a problem with one aspect of the Civil Rights Act - anyone else just get hit in eye by a big red flag?  Specifically, Paul claimed that had he been around during the passing of the Civil Rights Act he would have suggested a few changes.  He claimed that a private business or institution should be able to reserve the right to discriminate and/or segregate based on race as this right is protected by the First Amendment of our nation's constitution.  I was relieved to discover that many many republicans immediately distanced themselves from Paul and claimed that he should be withdrawn from the race but was incredibly disturbed however not entirely surprised to find that the Tea Partiers and Sarah Palin continued to support Rand thoroughly.  In a statement to clarify/defend his earlier WTF worthy statement Rand said:

"I don't want to be associated with those people, but I also don't want to limit their speech in any way in the sense that we tolerate boorish and uncivilized behavior because that's one of the things freedom requires is that we allow people to be boorish and uncivilized, but that doesn't mean we approve of it. I think the problem with this debate is by getting muddled down into it, the implication is somehow that I would approve of any racism or discrimination, and I don't in any form or fashion."

Is it just me or wouldn't it be a better idea to avoid making such unbelievably fucking dumb claims that you don't have to claim to not be a racist (or a witch -cough-O'Donnell-cough-).  Well, he said he's not associated with those people and doesn't wish to be so I guess that clears that up.....actually it doesn't, not at all in fact.  You see there has been another little bit of controversy swirling around Rand lately which also involves.....wait for it....racism!

Running a political campaign is no doubt a costly venture so I guess it's good to have a few friends with money who're willing to lend a helping hand, but what if that hand just got finished thumbing through a copy of Mein Kampf, would that pose a few moral or ethical delimas?  You'd like to think so wouldn't you?  Apparently not for Mr. Paul who has recieved money for his campaign from not one but several white supremacist, white seperatist (supremacist light), and Neo-Nazi organizations and individuals.  Here is a short list of a few people who've either been associated with Rand Paul and his campaign or donated money to it:

Chris Hightower-worked for Rand's campaign.  Former death metal band member who had racist epithets and photos on his MySpace page for over two years before they were deleted including a charming anecdote detailing a trip to a mall dressed in KKK garb and a photo posted on Martin Luther King day of an African-American man being lynched with a caption reading "Happy Nigger Day".  Sounds like a real sweetheart, huh?

Virginia Abernethey-self described white seperatist; she doesn't hate black people she just doesn't think they should live in the same country as she does.  She is a member of the Conservative Citizens Council which has its roots in a white hate group from the 1950's; one of its founding members was also the defense attorney for Martin Luther King's murderer.  They're basically neo-nazis with teeth and 5th grade+ reading levels.  On the CCC website it is shamelessly asserted as fact that African-Americans are genetically inferior to white people and that interracial marriage/immigration is turning the US population into a "slimy brown" mess.  Virginia donated money to the Rand Paul campaign.

Don Black- former KKK grand dragon and Neo-Nazi founder of Stormfront.com, a Neo-Nazi website.  Don donated money to Rand's campaign and petitioned for fellow his Nazis to donate as well.

As it turns out Rand's father Ron Paul also accepted money from Nazis during one of his own campaigns including Don Black as well.  He even took the time to take a picture with the former Grand Dragon

I find it hilarious that these Tea Partiers hold up pictures of Obama dressed as a Nazi with a Hitler moustache at their idiotic rallies because they don't agree with his financial policies but they fully support a man who is supported by Nazis and other white supremacists financially.

In one of my earlier posts I mentioned the odious Gubernatorial candidate of New York, Carl Paladino and his myriad homophobic claims during one of his campaign speeches including one in which he stated that homosexuality is inherently a less successful and valid lifestyle than heterosexuality.  The following is a list of a few LGBT people who've somehow found a way to overcome the terrible burden of their same-sex attraction and scrape together a few scraps of success:

I never thought it was possible but there is a Republican who is actually worse than Sarah Palin.  Her name is Christine O'Donnell and in case you're unfamiliar with her special brand of insanity I've decided to create a blog about her.

Christine O'Donnell is a Republican and was the GOP's candidate for Senator of Delaware.  I don't think I have the strength or the depth of insanity to fully illustrate the degree of lunacy that Christine spouts with astounding regularity so I'm just going to list a few quotes from Mrs. O'Donnell and let you draw your own conclusions:

"I dabbled into witchcraft. I never joined a coven. (...) One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic altar." (HUH?)

"American scientific companies are cross-breeding humans and animals and coming up with mice with fully functioning human brains."   To see an account of these horrific practices click here

"What's next? Orgy rooms? Menage a trois rooms?[Coedness] is like a radical agenda forced on college students." (In regard to co-ed dorms)

"We took the Bible and prayer out of public schools. Now we're having weekly shootings. We had the 60s sexual revolution, and now people are dying of AIDS."  (In regard to evolution being taught in schools rather than creationsim)

"During the primary, I heard the audible voice of God. He said, 'Credibility.'"   (How come God seems to be really interested in crazy people?)

"The Bible says that lust in your heart is committing adultery.  You can't masturbate without lust!"

These are the type of people who are running for office in this country; don't worry she lost, I was initially going to "Thank God" but in light of her goofy statements regarding the voice of God I have decided against it.  Not only does O'Donnell believe that God speaks to her she also believed that he would intercede on her behalf; when asked about her rising popularity among voters and I'm assuming soon-to-be mental patients O'Donnell said the following:

"The day that we saw a spike in the polls was a day that some people had a prayer meeting for me that morning for this campaign so I believe that prayer plays a direct role in this campaign and I always ask please pray for the campaign; please pray for our staff; please pray specifically that the eyes of the voters be opened."

Well it appears that Christine and her ilke's prayers were answered as evidently many eyes were indeed opened on November 2nd when she lost to her opponent Chris Coons by a landslide margin.  In her concession speech, O'Donnell stated, "Our voices were heard and we're not going to be quiet now.  This is just the beginning.  We've got a lot of work to do."  Indeed, the Republicans and the Tea Party people do have much work to do including finding worthy candidates and perhaps enrolling in some remedial spelling and language courses, seriously have you read some of their signs?  "No Amensty!" "Obama, read the Constiuion!"  Some of them are damned laughable.  These Tea Partiers, by the way, are the ones who backed O'Donnell and attended her asinine speeches.

Another pearl of wisdom we've recieved from O'Donnell is her personal view that women should not serve in our nation's military.  Her reasoning for such a claim is that they would ultimately serve as a distraction to our men in uniform; this sounds like a Monty Python skit doesn't it?  I can just see John Cleese and Eric Idle dodging bullets while distracted drooling service men's rifles spontaneously fire at the sight of a busty young MP.  Of course we all know that the military forbids any fraternizing between its troops but if O'Donnell had her way the severely distracted soldiers wouldn't even be able to (clears throat) sharpen their focus manually.  Jesus, with Ann Coulter claiming women shouldn't vote, O' Donnell saying they shouldn't be allowed to serve in the military and both being against a woman's right to choose it's no wonder a party like the Republicans full of fat, old, billionaire sexists love these women.

In regard to women like O'Donnell and Palin, South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint claimed, "When women or minorities get involved in politics as conservatives, they take a lot of hits from the press."  While I see his point I would like to say that maybe the reason Palin and O'Donnell suffer the slings and arrows of the "liberal media" is not because they are conservative women but more so because they are poorly educated, reactionary, bat-shit crazy conservative women.  Just a thought.

More Proof....

Just in case some of you remain unconvinced that Carl Paladino is a bigot and for all intents and purposes a moron I have gathered some additional evidence which may sway your opinions.  In addition to his outrageously homophobic claims Paladino has also acquired an email history not befitting of a Gubernatorial candidate but that of creepy nazi sex offender with an incredibly disturbed vile and fetishistic appetite.

It has been discovered that Carl Paladino's bigotry extends far beyond the gay community but also the African-American community, chiefly our president Barack Obama.  In one email which Paladino sent to some friends and staff members we see a picture of President Obama and his wife, our First Lady Michelle Obama dressed as a 1970's style pimp and hooker.  It is hardly tasteful but shockingly one of the more tactful emails I found.  Another email which exposes Paladino as a raging racist is as follows; the email shows a photograph of an airplane crashing and beneath it stands a group of black men, the caption of this image reads, "Holy shit! Run niggers run!"  I can see how someone might see that as racist but at least he warned them and, I guess we can attribute that kind warning to the Catholic views held in his heart.  Another email prompts one to click on a video to witness the "Obama Inauguration Rehearsal"; after doing so we witness a group of African tribesmen dancing....  As if this was not enough to damn Paladino's political career further evidence states that this final video is also quite popular on a neo-Nazi website called "Stormfront"-whether or not Paladino himself is a Nazi he obviously shares their notorious sense of Aryan humor.

Well, Paladino really did his damnedest to insult both members of the LGBT and African-American communities but wait...there's more.  Another email Paladino sent out includes a hardcore XXX pornographic video titled "Miss France 2008 Fucking"-classy move Carl.  And finally one more email sent out by Paladino shows that not only is he a homophobe, a racist, a sexist and a porn fiend he's also into illegal sex acts!  The final email features a woman having sex with a male horse titled "Easy, Steady Big Fella...XXX".  At first Carl's antigay supporters were appalled but it was explained that it was in fact a video of a MALE horse and FEMALE human so it wasn't gay or anything.  Oh, and just in case you were wondering Paladino lost by over 25% to Cuomo.

I'm not one to believe in divine intervention or the theory that "what goes around comes around" but it certainly does seem that karma or some law of reciprocity was at work here; if you practice some sort of twisted/bigoted/sexist/depraved/wtf-worthy/unhealthily fetishistic/racist bullshit then maybe, just maybe some sort of twisted/bigoted/sexist/depraved/wtf-worthy/unhealthily fetishistic/racist bullshit might come back to bite you in the ass.

Politics is without a doubt a dirty business.  Every time a new elction rolls around we are, more often than not, subject to deciding on the lesser of two evils.  There are a few instances where some of the evils of certain candidates are a bit more obvious than others.  In the New York race for Governor the choice between the lesser of two evils is quite clear.  The Republican candidiate for Governor in New York is Carl Paladino.  Paladino began his political career in the 1970's as a Democrat but always associated himself as a "Conservative Democrat" or a "Reagan Democrat"; after expressing his views on homosexuality during his 2010 Gubenatorial campaign it is no surprise that he would have associated himself with a president who in the 1980's during the AIDS epidemic did little to nothing to provide government funds to further AIDS research.

During a campaign speech in October Paladino addressed the issue of same-sex marriage before a group of Orthodox Jewish constituents.  Paladino claimed, "I just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and raising a family, and I don't want them brainwashed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid and successful option -- it isn't."  Let's not forget that while Paladino delivered this speech (which was met with applause by his audience) the nation was still reeling from the tragedy of the several young people who had taken their lives due to homophobia, homophobic bullying and abuse.  It is absolutley clear that by making such a claim, Carl Paladino has nothing but contempt for the LGBT community and as a proud gay man I am offended and disgusted by his claims.

Paladino went on to attack his opponent, Andrew Cuomo for supporting the LGBT community of New York by marching in a gay pride parade.  Paladino said, "I didn't march in the gay parade this year -- the gay pride parade this year. My opponent did, and that's not the example we should be showing our children."  This claim was also met with applause and praise from his audience.  Apparently showing your support for a minority group, reassuring them that they are valid human beings and that they do have a place in society is setting a bad example for children in Paladino's eyes; all that I can assume from these statements is that Carl Paladino hates homosexuals and he feels the nation's youth should be taught to do the same.  I am happy to report, however, that Mr. Paladino did show some restraint during his homophobic rant.  Newsday.com reported that he did in fact omit a line from his written speech which stated,"There is nothing to be proud of in being a dysfunctional homosexual." Perhaps he thought that one was a bit "over the line" I mean he already claimed queers are not valid human beings and that they should be shunned by letting our young people know that they are abnormal and somethign to be feared so maybe he figured calling us dysfunctional was just beating a dead horse.  Following Paladino's hateful diatribe a response was issued from the camp of his opponent, Andrew Cuomo.  It said, "Mr. Paladino's statement displays a stunning homophobia and a glaring disregard for basic equality. These comments along with other views he has espoused make it clear that he is way out of the mainstream and is unfit to represent New York."

In response to the backlash from the public, Michael Caputo, Paladino's campaign manager defended Mr. Paladino, "Carl Paladino is simply expressing the views that he holds in his heart as a Catholic. Carl Paladino is not homophobic, and neither is the Catholic Church."  In response, all I can do is call Holy BullShit. Paladino's a vile bigot and the Catholic Church has been one of the biggest and loudest opponents of gay rights in history but I guess since they do it in the name of God ya know like the Crusades and the Inquisition its ok (not to say that denying people rights and telling them they're damned is equal to the horrors of the Inquisition or the Crusades but it's just one more item on a long long long list of stupid bullshit perpetrated by religious people, namely the Catholic Church in the name of their imaginary friend).  But I guess when you are taught as a Catholic like Paladino you're bound to be a bit nuts.

Here's my first blog portfolio for el236, Writing for the Internet.  My blog primarily focuses on politics and my views on wahts happening in the world of politics.  I try to blend a good bit of humor in my writing as not to sound preachy or boring and honestly because sometimes this shit is just too ridiculous not to laugh at and make a joke out of.  My views are very liberal so my blogs have a liberal, leftist bias and I don't deny it-take a good hard look at some of the figureheads of the right as well as some of the people I go after in these entries and tell they don't deserve it.  I am fairly new to blogging, my only other experience with blogging was for a class and I did not enjoy it - mainly because we could only write about certain things which made sense it was a class on American Lit so it would be odd to have a blog on why Sarah Palin is an idiot and scares the living shit out of me but I really enjoy the freedom that I've had on this blog to write about what I want.  I also enjoy the idea of commenting on people's blogs and replying to comments people might leave on my own-this is something I have to get better at I admit, like I said this is still pretty new to me.  Anyway, I hope you enjoy reading my blogs, I'll try to keep em funny and not get so grim as I have in my latest entry but I felt it was only appropriate and it was something I feel very strongly about.  That is another thing I love about blogging, you can voice your opinions and share it with the world, it is a great way to get your voice heard-provided anyone reads it....

It seems, at least on the surface, that homphobia has begun to dwindle in this country due to an increase in progressive legislation, an increase in LGBTQQI (Lesbian, Gay, BiSexual, Transgendered, Queer, Questioning & Intersexed) people coming out and thus eliminating our community's former and crippling invisibility and also with homosexuality being seen and talked about more openly on television, on the news, in schools etc.  More and more people are realizing that the only thing seperating homosexuals from heterosexuals is sexual orientation, and in that realization many stereotypes have begun to crumble; there is no "gay agenda", it is not a choice, homosexuals are no more promiscous than heterosexuals, we can't nor do we wish to recruit your kids to increase the numbers of our armies (no we don't have armies), and we don't all love Cher (she scares the shit out of me, I think item number five in her dialy beauty regiment in "Drink the blood of virgins" seriously she's like 90 Botox isn't that powerful).

As a gay man I have been very pleased with the changes in the world in regard to homosexuality.  I didn't live through the previous decades wherein homosexuals had little to no rights at all, so I know I can't appreciate it as well as others but growing up as a homosexual in a very conservative, Christian family in a very redneck Bible-thumpin', NRA-lovin' area like South Western PA can make you appreciate it a bit more.  With the Matthew Shepard Act being passed, which finally granted federal hate crime law protection to LGBTQQI people, and the overturning of Don't Ask Don't Tell, a discriminatory policy of the United States military which forbid homosexuals from being out in the military, the penalty of which resulted in a dishonorable discharge the world looked a little more promising and a little more welcoming.

Recently however these progressive items of legislation have met vehement opposition from the Christian right-shock!  In the wake of the 9/11 attacks Jerry Falwell, a well-known televangelist and avid promoter of anything anti-gay, anti-woman, anti-progressive, anti-Telletubbies (that's not a joke, he said the purple one was queer) claimed that not only did he feel that homosexuals, feminists and abortion caused God to punish the US on 9/11 but that God Himself told him so.  I cannot express with written word how deeply I anticiapte the day when claims such as these are met with universal disapproval, and an all expenses paid trip to a fully equiped mental health facility.  While, Falwell made this outrageous claim his fellow evangelical whack-job, who according to his sermons also has Jesus on his speed-dial, Pat Robertson whole-heartedly agreed.  To read the transcript of their actual quotes please click here.

Religious hate is nothing new to homosexuals and it sadly almost expected to happen.  Falwell, Robertson and their ilke have always demostrated their willingness to embrace exclusion, bigotry and refusal at any attempt to dialogue with any gay rights group but it was another religious figure that recently recieved a good bit of backlash for a claim which demonized homosexuals.  Pope Benedict XVI, the pontiff and leader of the Catholic Church (don't see them at too many Pride parades) recently said that he was both proud and happy with numerous Catholics who've made it their mission to fight against legislation that would grant homosexuals the right to marry, he claimed that these efforts to combat gay marriage "help respond to some of the most insidious and dangerous threats to the common good today", a message of love so profound, Pat Robertson told me that Jesus actually had to cover his face and walk away shaking his head, I guess cause he was so moved.

I don't think people fully understand the results of such venomous claims.  When straight children are taught by their parents, trusted adult authorities, and leaders of their church that homosexuals are sick and evil, threats to the common good and their mere existence can bring down the thunderous, fiery wrath of God how do you think they will treat a homosexual when first they meet one?  Maybe like this?  Or this?  It is disturbing the number and frequency of cases reported homophobic violence and even murder today.  Due to the hate-filled rhetoric spewed by these fat, multimillionare "men of god" and the all-too-real possibilty that one day their sick, evil lives will be cut short by some maniac attribites to the fact that gay teens are more than four times likley to attempt to end their lives than their heterosexual counterparts.  For a link to a page on the dangers and realities of gay teen suicide as well as a list of related links click here .  It is also estimated that every 5hours a gay teen attempts to kill themself.  The dangers of hate-speech and violence are very real and are not going away, evil never goes away quietly.  Both the attackers and those who were attacked are, to a degree, victims.  The assailants were taught to hate by the lies and cruelty of their religions and were thus brainwashed, even as young as 14 years old they have been taught to hate so strongly that they are willing to take a life. Meanwhile, gay teens the world over are contimplating taking their own lives.  Today, it is virtually guaranteed that about five gay teens will try to cut their lives short by their own hands; some will succeed.  Something is very wrong with this and no one seems to notice or to care, its like everyone's just walking around in a daze.  I urge you to fight for inclusion, and love and acceptance everyday.  There are local groups that you can join if you wish to lend a hand in the struggle for equality, there will be links posted at the bottom of the page.  Also, SHU does have a Gay Straight Alliance, if you would like to help make the SHU community more accepting, more inclusive by joining the network of LGBTQQI students and their straight allies please email me @ joh1758@setonhill.edu I'm the president.  Changes need to be made, lives need to be saved.

This is a follow-up to my earlier entry regarding Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor Rally".  As if it wasn't bad enought that Glenn Beck got to spew his biased, fear-based, no-legit-facts-to-be-found, ego-driven lunacy guess who joined him....you bet'chya, Alaska's former governor, Sarah Palin.  She, like Beck has been under fire recently, ever since McCain pulled her out of the tundra and into the spotlight for the '08 presidential election and announced that she would be his running mate at which point I can only imagine thousands of Democrats breathed a sigh of relief. I'm not sure if that decision should be classified as a savy political tactic to combat the Democratic Party's more diverse presidential hopefuls such as Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama or an inadvertent surrender (just a reminder to all those who still claim the election could've gone either way, it was a landslide-they kicked your ass-sorry 'my friends').  So let's review good ole' Glenn's special guest's track record-

-She was severely coached for the vice-presidentail debate vs Joe Biden  I mean come on, she wrote the words TAX CUTS on her palm so she wouldn't forget to mention it.  That has been a GOP constant for decades, that would be like Wil E. Coyote writting the words ROAD RUNNER on his palm.

-She apparently fancied herself such a wordsmith, dare I say a modern day Shakespeare that she coined a few of her own words such as,"refudiate" and "misunderestimate", as if "you bet'chya" and her creepy permanent Jack Nicholson in drag-like grin didn't make conscious Americans' collective skin crawl enough.

-In response to being asked how her experience as Alaska's governor could aid in foreign policy and affairs should she be elected VP of the nation, she replied with an eerie, child-like confidence that because Russia can be seen from certain points in Alaska she was the right gal for the job.

I mean granted the media can distort things and tilt the perception of certain political figures so I suppose it would be wise to judge Mrs. Palin, aka Miss Wasila, slowly.  I mean no where is the media's blatant attacks and attempts to besmerch her reputation and character with sneaky, loaded trick questions more clear than when Katy Couric inquired, "What newspapers do you read?"  Bad form, Katy, bad form indeed.

This is the kind of mind that Glenn Beck attracts, Sarah Palin, and the Tea-Party people, whom Sarah Palin referred to as the "cream of the crop", personally I think they more closely resemble a herd of mentally deficient, easily swayed fools overflowig with a heady mixture of hate and fear (when I'm not hatin' Mexicans 'n queers, or pleasuring myself to the sight of my Burt Gummer from Tremors-like gun collection I watch Glenn Beck-I think that's their slogan I'm not 100%).  87,000 (estimate, no one seems to know the exact numbers) people attended the "Restoring Honor" rally.  Is any one else terrified by this?  I mean yeah they're idiots, but they're a shitload of idiots, and they can vote!  Some moderate thinkers, or just any one with a brain stem, I'd be willing to settle for that in the meantime, needs to start combating this insanity with the same tenacity as the loons or we could have another Bush.  Or worse, another Cheney.  That's not a joke, that's horrifying.  I just shuddered a bit typing that.
