EL 200 Portfolio 3: Reading reflections

Chapter 13 of the Student Newspaper Survival guide dealt with the legalities of a school newspaper. Although students at Seton Hill University (SHU) do not deal with these types of issue, I still felt that they were important for a larger publication. One thing that bothers me most about writing is the fact that it is easy to fabricate of plagiarize stories. Chapter 14 was vital in validating that for me. These are serious offenses and can result in an assortment of disciplines, including termination.
Advertising is a way to get a business on their feet. The Setonian uses advertising minimally . A larger newspaper utilizes a lot. Chapter 18 discusses advertising in depth. The chapter does not relate well to the Setonian, but in the future, it may serve well as SHU expands.
The assigned reading, Going Digital discussed the online version of school newspapers and how Multimedia suffers due to neglect by the Generation Y tech savvy world. I agreed with the author, but I felt that the finger cannot be pointed at just one person, it should look at the whole slew of editors before it.
Jobs are plentiful in the online world. Rosales makes it clear that the online world is highly demanding and there are positions that need to be filled. Chapter 11: Jobs in the Multimedia Marketplace structures his rationale in the assigned text, The Elements Of Online Journalism.
Chapter 16 of The Student Newspaper Survival Guide focuses on design and graphics. This chapter validates Rosales' Chapter 11. Graphic and design challenges the journalist to go beyond that of writing skills and more of the physical field of art and text construction.
The readings have shifted to law and design in Portfolio 3. It gives us students the know how and awareness of the dangers of plagiarizing, the skills of design, morales of the newspaper, and possible positions in the online job market.
