Suitable for Halloween.

A New York Times article on beautiful mausoleums reminded me of what fun it is to visit cemeteries while on vacation.

Here are my top vacation cemetery picks:

  • Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond Va. Burial ground of Confederate soldiers and generals, immortalized in a poem by Margaret Junkin Preston.
  • Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington Va. JFK and many others live on here....although I prefer to visit the Custis Lee Mansion.
  • Pere Lachaise, Paris Yup, my obligatory Paris mention. This was awesome, though, to see Moliere, Heloise and Abelard, Poulenc and Morrison. The dead live in little above-ground houses. Pretty neat.

    Are you obsessed with all things Paris, too? I mean, I'm a French minor (I would be a major, if they had one...) so of course I'm obsessed. Have you been to France (if yes, then I'm already jealous!). Do share, do share!

    Back in the day you used to be able to win a free trip to a European destination if you won a quiz bowl about WCT (mandatory Western culture class your sophomore year)...a group of my friends won, and we got to go to Paris on Seton Hill's penny! Very fun!

    So, clearly I'm obsessed. ;)

    Pere Lachaise is on my list of places I want to visit. Knowing Abelard and Heloise are there just bumped it up to a higher spot on my list.

    wow! Do they still do that?! I would love to go to Paris. I'm going someday, I'm just not sure when that "someday" is... *sigh*

    Cemetaries never bothered me, so I'll bet it'd be fascinating to go to see the graves of greats like Moliere and Heloise :) Filed trip, anyone?

    I am looking forward to Halloween and eat chocolate and indulge in guttony of candy! The closest I am going to Paris is when I have my scary movie-a-thon and watch American Werewolf in Paris!
