Friend Update
I spoke with my father last night about my friend Erika who was recently in an accident at her high school during softball practice.
Erika's father called my father, since they are friends, and he briefly filled him in on what is happening.
Erika came out of her coma. Her speech is slurred, and she's going to have to learn how to walk and most other motor skills all over again, but she is alive.
The prognosis is that she will never play softball again, however.
When my father told me this, I nearly started crying. Here I was in college, not playing my favorite sport because I didn't want to and I don't have time to. Erika won't play softball again because she can't. She literally won't be able to. This breaks my heart.
I'll continue to pray for her, in hopes that she and her family will overcome this immense challenge.

Karissa,
I know this is a hard time for you.
I spent many hours (months, years) at the softball fields - I understand the dedication, the excitement and frustrations experienced by the players and their families. What happened to your friend is something that no one is ever prepared to think about.
Please call if you need to and remember that you have a support system here.
