Cherry-slaw.

I promised Julie that I'd let her know when cherry season started, since I work at a fruit market.

Julie, the cherries are here.

At least the Bing cherries are, anyway. Allow me to reconstruct one of many similar scenes from the Market:

Customer (While laying items for purchase on the counter): I think that's all for today...
Karissa (Removing her trusty "favorite" pen from its home in her back pocket): alright... (Begins totaling up the order)
Customer (Glances around idly while Karissa scribbles the prices she has memorized; eyes land on the bags of cherries): oh! Cherries! How much are they?
Karissa (Interrupted; stares blankly for a moment, then looks up at Customer and answers): Cherries are $2.89 per pound.
Customer (Pulls several bags from the display; cherries are dumping from the bags onto the countertop where Karissa diligently tries to finish the order): I'll take these, too.
Karissa (Internal sigh of annoyance): okay. (Totals order). That'll be... $_.__.

Only too often is this scene repeated. And the reaction never varies, either.

"Oh! Cherries!"

Apparently people just can't resist them, even though $2.89 per pound is kind of steep for the little ruby gems.

Julie, white cherries will be in later. Bings are all we've got for the moment... June is the month for cherries, though. I'll bet the prices drop significantly.

I'm not a big fan of cherries... I would rather be like, "Oh! Kiwi or strawberries are on sale!"

We ran out of strawberries today. And bananas--which are no longer $.29 per pound, but now $.33 per pound. We always have tons of kiwi--I'm a big fan, there... :^)

I've noticed that cherries are so expensive now ($2.99 a pound @ Giant Eagle, where I'm working now), but it doesn't stop anybody from buying the prepackaged 1.5 or 2 pound bags!

Are you working at the fruit market near your house? That's awesome! :D

I know... our prices will probably go down with June being "cherry month" and all. However, I really can't understand people that complain about bananas going from $.29 to $.33 and yet they still tack on three one-pound bags of cherries when I'm almost done with their order. *argh* I'll never understand people.
