Karissa does movies.
It seems that I have an obsession with movies that seem odd, paranormal, frightening, or even horrific.
?!
You might be wondering why, considering that I'm your average everyday wouldn't-hurt-a-fly girl-next-door. To tell the truth, I have no idea why this is so. But I love "scary" movies (not to be confused with "Scary Movie" or any of its loathesome successors; what disdain in the industry!--I'm not even going to link to that). I think it has been since watching "The Haunting" when I was about fourteen.
I can't recall how many thriller-style flicks I've seen henceforth, but some of my favorites include "The Bone Collector" (zucchini?!), "Psycho" (just saw the '90s version again the other day on TBS around nine in the morning... who shows that stuff at nine in the morning?), "Bless the Child" (soo creepy), and "Th13teen Ghosts" (<- do NOT watch that one alone).
Well, last night when I realized that my brother Jacob, 16, and I were going to have nothing to do, we decided to see "The Forgotten."
I've wanted to see this movie since I saw the previews for it before "Troy," "King Arthur," and "The Village" (none of which, by the way, merit me saying more about them than that I did, in fact, pay entirely too much to endure such agony through cinematography in a cushy, stadium seat for an hour plus). I knew that it went to theaters on Thursday--and that I wanted to see it before anyone could ruin it for me by telling me what happens or some non-sense about reading movie-spoilers...
Anyway, Jacob and I got to the theater, and after missing the first twenty minutes of the first showing at 7:30 we decided to just wait until the second one started at 9:30. We filled up our time roaming about and even visiting my aunt. But I was anxious to get to there, and before I knew it, I was anticipating the end of some more terrible-looking previews.
Enduring those previews is an art, really. I can't help but think that previews are the movie industry's way of putting really long commercials at the beginning of the movie, so interruptions aren't needed later on. Movies are unlike films shown on television only because when you're into the movie so deeply that you can barely breathe, it's some crucial part and the suspense is building higher and higher, and suddenly... there's a commercial for Pringles inserted with that "popping" noise that could be considered the newest experiment with Pavlov's classical conditioning--that would never happen in a movie. Or at least it had better not, because otherwise I want to know where my eight bucks went.
Nonetheless, I got to see the movie and I was not disappointed. I normally don't have any physical reaction to movies (outside of convulsing in laughter), but certain scenes this time around (that I won't describe in detail to spoil it) definetly ellicted a response from me and my nervous system. I clutched my heart, gasping. I covered my mouth in shock and disbelief. And I loved every minute of it, even with tears in my eyes at the end.

Movie spoilers are money savers. When a movie, such as The Village, is primarily based upon plot, I would rather read the spoiler than dish out the 8 bucks.

But it's not like you would've seen the "scary" movie anyway, right, Amanda? (just teasing) The Village was weak, but I think the costume would be an amazing Halloween costume! ;)

I absolutely love scary movies. I believe I have well over 100 dvds at home. Those Best Buy bargains are great (3 for $15). During the month of October, I watch at least 2 scary movies a day, this is my tradition every year. Thanks for the links to check out those movies.

Hey Karissa - its Dan. I SO want to see "The Forgotten." I hope its as good as it looks! :)

Who is this Dan? Would I know him, Karissa? Hello?
Posted by: Amanda at September 27, 2004 8:40 PM
Haha, Dan is Donna's brother! I visited his blog and commented, and I think he's cool. Apparently he stopped by here! Thanks, Dan! :) And as for "The Forgotten"?--it is really thrilling.

I have something to say about movie previews.
First off, I think I am the only person in the known universe who enjoys watching them. (This is true. I get annoyed when I'm too late to see them at the movies. I even watch them before watching a movie at home; I hate when people fast-forward.)
So I'm nuts, but especially for those movies you would rather not sit through, you get all the best parts of the movie in about a minute instead of sifting through an hour and a half!

So, i don't mind movie previews too much either. Its not the end of the world if i dont see them, but i kind of like them.

Ahh, the end of the world. Yes, that could be associated with movie previews, in my humble opinion.
Anyway, I don't mind them when they're worthwhile. For instance, that's how I found out about "The Forgotten" in the first place! Certainly worth the torture of the other previews to have reached that one :)

So, after you raved about it on you blog, and one of my other friends raved about it in their AIM info, i decided to go see the forgotten. It was not what i expected it to be at all, i thought it was going to be some murder horror movie, it was more like, mystery science fiction, it was better than i thought. It rocked, i want to see it again.

Glad that you went for the cinematic experience, Lori. I did enjoy that movie quite a bit. I can't wait till it's on DVD 'cause I don't own any movies... so maybe I'd get that one? ;)
