To a Carvèd Pumpkin
Last night's iContact Poetry Slam was a success. Good friends, poetry, laughs, and coffee made the chilly evening cozy inside DV8.
I ended up reading quite a bit, but not all of my own writing. I only brought with me two original poems that I had written just earlier that day, so I read from last year's issues of Eye Contact when there was a good place to fit it in the line-up.
But I had a fabulous time reading! I love being able to interpret the poem on my own without having to discuss literary elements all of the time. Since this was an informal setting, I felt liberated and had fun stressing words and changing intonation in my voice. I really enjoyed it.
As I said, I wrote two poems. I'll post them here on the blog for your reading enjoyment.
To a Carvèd PumpkinO pumpkin guts
O pumpkin guts
Your seeds are mucus covered
Your mildew smell
Leaves barren shell
Fruition: fist discoveredKnife plungèd in
And smile bore in
Your face I carved, so caring
This Halloween
Your candle gleam
Through mask I’ve meant for scaringThis holiday, so thrilling
But pumpkin, your guts spillingO pumpkin guts
O pumpkin guts
I’ll roast you now for salting
And munch your guts
Orange, gooey smut
'Fore o'er the fence you're vaulting!
That one I wrote with the season in mind :-) The next one I wrote after what seemed like a week-long struggle with rhyming... (Amanda, you may enjoy this)
The World’s Worst PoemDon’t hate.
Alliterate!
Or demonstrate…
Your tedious tendency to rhyme.Obliterate?
Or just create?
You generate
Rhythms, cadence all in time.Narrate,
Removèd state
This random bate
Tells story longer, more than mine.Incinerate
Or marinate
But do cremate!
Words digested, line by line.

These are wonderful, Karissa! I was happy to hear you read this new work at the Poetry Slam, which was an awful lot of fun. Eye Contact is doing a great job this year and it's things like this that really make it more than just "publication work." Bravo to you, and everyone else who chipped in.

I wish I had taken the time to write a poem for one of Dr. A's prompts! Instead I took a nap, which was both useless and unsuccessful.
Great poems!

The first one sounds like it could be sung to "Oh Christmas tree."
J'adore! ;)

That's the point of the one "To a Carvèd Pumpkin," Mar :-) Glad you caught that... Thanks, everyone, for all the feedback on my writing! I'm happy you all like it!
