Why we need chocolate chip cookies

Chocolate chip cookies are friend to humankind. Since their invention, people have used them to console, bring cheer, and celebrate. The simplest baked good, and arguably most delicious, could most likely be implemented in a plan for world peace with great success.

I needed chocolate chip cookies.

On a personal note, what with all this academic blogging going on, this week has been one of the roughest I have had in my time in college. Various disappointments, a number of family members suddenly going in to the hospital, a heavy work load, and two page long to-do list kept me from sleeping and from being my "normal" self.

I ran out of vitamins and, since I probably slept a total of approximately 20 hours this week, I feared that with the abundance of sicknesses being passed around campus that I might end up catching something... So far so good, but I'm still trying to rebound. I have seen better days altogether.

I decided that I needed to go home to see my family and my dogs. It's nice to reconnect with loved ones when things get to be too much. I sat with my cocker spaniel Sherwood and just petted his chocolate brown fur for almost two hours... I needed that. I kicked off my shoes--two of them!--and put my feet up to sit and talk with my mom. She filled me in on the week's happenings, which have been far from ideal, and we talked about my siblings and when we'd all be able to get together.

Mom made mashed potatoes with dinner. It doesn't take much to please me, food-wise, but one of my comfort foods is mashed potatoes (and my mom's are the best in the world--don't try to argue with me about that either). Dad had cinnamon jellybeans and I ate a handful of them for dessert. We talked more, and my brother was making us all laugh... something about Jell-o... The atmosphere was still a little tense, though, since the week's events have been trying on us all.

Then mom pulled out a secret weapon, guaranteed to make anyone feel better: chocolate chip cookies.

I was upstairs playing a demo version of the game "Dead Rising" on Xbox with my brother when the familiar chocolately aroma found me. Just like a good friend. I relaxed. I melted away from my stress. I realized as I descended the stairs that yes, I needed chocolate chip cookies and I needed them tonight. (Moms just know these things... I think it's a sense that comes along with being able to make the answer "Because I said so" the end of an argument.)

I'm taking tonight to watch a movie with my family and eat my beloved chocolate chip cookies. Tomorrow, if I get to schoolwork: great. If not, I plan to take care of it in the evening and on Sunday. I need time. Thank God this week is over. Thank God some things in life are beginning to assemble themselves again. Thank God for mothers who know their children. And thank God for chocolate chip cookies... because we need chocolate chip cookies.

I also recommend pineapples, Karissa. My prayers are always with you.

Ooo, I love pineapple... but I guess since the closest grocery store is closed and the next closest one is about 20 minutes from my hours chocolate chip cookies will cut it. :) Thank you, my dear. Much appreciated.
