Ode to Cruise Control

This past weekend I made my first trip home since moving east. My car was fantastic for the trip, and I got close to 37 miles per gallon (and I don't have a hybrid--just a Volkswagen). Trixie, my puppy, got a little carsick on the way there, but she did much better on the ride home.

On my mind the whole time I was balancing my speed as well as keeping my sanity in the midst of heavy truck traffic was cruise control. How I love cruise control! My Jetta is the first car I've driven that's had it, and it is a beautiful invention. So beautiful, in fact, that I was inspired to write about it. Enjoy.

Driving can be such a pleasure
On open road, furrowed or flat.
Setting speed, measure for measure--
I don't claim to be best at that...

A Godsend to drivers worldwide:
The option to idle the motor,
Accusations of lead-foot belied,
My mind becomes the new rotor.

(Now as for my poetic skills
I realize I'm pushing my worth.
But truth overcomes any frills
Where rhyming may magnify dearth.)

The whole concept just blows my mind.
Cruise control's quite the invention!
The man who invented it? Blind...
Not something many folks mention.

While it doesn't make the time pass,
My foot isn't cramped with tension;
(Not to mention that it saves gas...)
Speed's not taking my attention.
