Weekend-long birthday celebration

I hate when my birthday falls on a Monday. Now that I work full-time, when I realized the date of the day I was even less thrilled with the idea. Fortunately I have a really nice boss and work for a small company...

The festivities started on Friday. Mike arrived, and we just chilled out since Saturday was the trip to Philadelphia.

The trip itself was fabulous. It's not a bad drive from Harrisburg. We didn't get lost, but we did pull over once because there was a very inconveniently placed Chili's restaurant (one of the landmarks that we were near Mike D.'s house is the Chili's, but that didn't jive with the directions, so we stopped to assess the situation). Mike D. is a terrific tour guide. I think he should start his own business... In addition to (finally) seeing the City of Brotherly Love, it was great to reconnect with good friends. I wouldn't have wanted the day to go any other way... except for that part about chasing after the Phlash bus. I could've done without that. My poor little foot...

I had a little surprise planned for the return trip to Harrisburg, though. Instead of taking the turnpike, we took a state route through Lancaster. Why Lancaster? Well, if you live in western PA and you're reading this, you've seen about 8 million Sonic commercials and know darn well that there isn't a Sonic within reasonable driving distance (nearest to Pittsburgh is Toledo, OH). Talking with my co-worker Shaun one day I learned that there is a Sonic in Lancaster, and that it wouldn't be out of the way en route from Philly... So I printed directions to "???" and from "???" to my place for the return trip. Mike was puzzled, but I think he was happy when we ate at Sonic. It was pretty neat, I have to say.

Sunday was nice and simple: church, delicious fruity salad for lunch, movie, browsing at B&N, reheated Philly cheesesteaks for dinner. Great day all around. Monday, my actual day of birth, was terrific as well. My boss gave me the whole day off, so I slept in, first of all (which I haven't done in a long time). Mike and I had lunch at my place then went to the Capital City Mall so I could use up some birthday coupons I'd received in the mail. We also did the Build-a-Bear Workshop!!! It was simply adorable. Made my day. Then at another store I bought an ottoman/coffee table (quite possibly the greatest invention since the chair). Finally, we went to dinner.

I was sad it was over since the weekend had been so good to me... I received things in the mail from many friends and family members. My friends also set a new record for the number of birthday wishes on my Facebook wall. I ordered an extra battery for my digital camera thanks to a special birthday offer from Olympus, which I received today. And, so far as I know, I'm still waiting on one last package... (Amanda).

At least the excitement always dwindles. I still have cake, and the cards will stay on my wall for a time. While this is the first birthday in my life that I have not hosted a birthday party (usually they're pool parties, and yes, I did have one last year), it was still a good day (*ahem* weekend).
