"Lappy, I've got to have more power!"
Lappy, my beloved iBook G4, is just over 2 years old. I love him dearly. Best computer I ever bought.
Since I'm basically making my living off my writing, I need Lappy to be in good condition--run a Photoshop marathon while doing jumprope with Word and Safari, take on iCal in a fist-fight while sword fighting with iChat and boxing with my HTML editor--and do what I need him to do to get the job done. I don't think I'm exceedingly demanding, but I had noticed Lappy slowing down a bit. Arthritis? No--factory-standard RAM.
I realize my processor could be faster (and that upgrading that would make a big difference), but I knew I couldn't afford to do that on my freelance writing/web design budget. I know without a doubt that I can't afford a new computer (something I originally anticipated getting with the job I had after graduation, but never happened), so I did the next best thing. Yesterday I got Lappy some new RAM. I went from 512 mb to 1.5 gb. There is a noteworthy difference in performance! I am pleased. Money well spent.
The next investment I make will probably be a new battery (since Lappy used to last a little longer without his AC tether). But for now Lappy has given me more power--all that I asked for.
I'm now eligible to upgrade to the latest operating system, too, if I want. Leopard has some pretty cool features, but I'm waiting a little while before hopping on the bandwagon. The only reason I'd buy it sooner is if there is a good sale on Black Friday (which I doubt). Regardless, I've extended Lappy's life by giving him more power. Lappy can't compete with a MacBook Pro, but I don't need him to--Lappy doesn't have to compete to win my geeky technological heart.

Karissa,
Why is it that I heard your title in Strongbad's voice?

LOL, thanks Dr. Sasmor. That's probably because Strongbad's laptop was named Lappy, too. (He had a Compy, too!) Although there may be many laptops bearing the name "Lappy," to me there is truly only one and he is mine. :)

Yes, but Strongbad didn't have a Scottish accent! Also, I think if there's something called Lappy in your life, it should be a cat :)
