Flamingo knitting
Yes, I'm at it again. I'm experimenting with knitting like never before. Sure there has been knit-o-gator, a couple hats, a puppy sweater, and too many scarves to count... But never before have I attempted a flamingo.
I've determined that I'm not very good at following patterns. I can do it if I have an unlimited amount of time to focus on said pattern (like I did for the hat and puppy sweater I linked to above), but the best things seem to come from my freestyle knitting. Knit-o-gator is a product of my creative stitching. And now, friends, I bring you the flamingo.
This is for a friend of mine (who hopefully doesn't check my blog very often!). We have a little inside joke about flamingos, so I knitted one for her for Christmas this year. I really had fun just playing around trying to get things to look like I could picture them in my mind.
The bent leg is all knit, but the straight leg is actually a clip-style clothespin carefully wrapped in yarn. I learned to knit a ball, so that's the body. The neck is the same style knitting as the bent leg (called an I-cord). The head and neck are all one piece, and the beak is separate. In the neck I used layered twist-ties to help the neck keep its shape (and so my little bird can hold her head up!). The wings are my favorite part--I used my newly acquired skill of knitting cables to give them a feathered look and tapered off the end to create the wing tips. Needless to say, I'm pretty thrilled with how it turned out!
I wish I could post more of the things I've been knitting lately, but I fear if I do that I will spoil Christmas surprises!
I should've known I'd be a knitting monster from the beginning...
