Karissa v. Deer, Round 2

Christmas was great! I got awesome games for my Nintendo DS and some terrific books. The food was fantastic, as usual, and it was really good to see my family. Everything was nice until I hit a deer with my mother's car on the way home from my aunt's house.

It was a huge buck. Running down a hillside onto a road doesn't seem like a good idea, but this deer thought he knew what was up. Maybe he was on a dare from some friends. Maybe he pulled a Wylie Coyote and didn't realize he was off an edge until he looked down.

Regardless of how he got to the road, when I saw him I swerved into the other lane--no one else was even on the road with me and I recall realizing that and knowing what I was about to do was safe. I remember thinking that if I hit him head-on he would probably roll up on the car because he was that big. I remember thinking for a tenth of a second that perhaps he would stop or I could avoid him.

Nope.

He slammed into the front and right side of mom's Passat. Neither of my brothers even saw the deer coming, so my sudden steering served as a surprise. I remained calm, only screaming as we hit the stupid thing, and found a place to pull over. Caleb got out of the car first and I knew things were not good when he took one look at the front of the car. I couldn't hear him, but his mouth said, "Aw, crap, you guys..."

That's the long version. The abbreviated version goes more like this: High-beams. Antlers. Sharp swerve. Contact. Screaming. "Oh my God." "Pull over." "I'm pulling over." "Are you okay?" Blinkers. "Is the car okay?" "Aw, crap, you guys..." "No, it's not." Disbelief. Deep breath. "I'm calling mom and dad."

The damage is pretty ugly--smashed lights, crinkled metal, hair stuck in crevices between crunched metal... I'm glad I wasn't alone this time. I'm glad I was able to be calm and clearheaded since this wasn't my first deer. I used to think deer were cute. Now I think they're mostly just brainless and obnoxious road obstacles... and that we need more hunters in my area.
