Straddling the fence: conference time
Yesterday I attended E-Magnify's 11th annual Building a World-Class Business conference in downtown Pittsburgh. Oh, what fun!
Maybe it's because I've had the opportunity to attend E-Magnify's conference a number of times, maybe it's because this year I had a great deal to do with the theme development and portions of writing, but I always find the conference particularly exciting... This year I straddled the fence, so to speak, being part of the behind-the-scenes work as well as playing the role of an attendee/volunteer.
I passed out some business cards and met some new people--conference standards--but hearing and seeing what I wrote used at the conference for others to see hear and see? I was overjoyed. I don't mean to minimize the element of networking, but for me the real point of interest was feeling my writing in action all around me.
This year I was a graduate of SHU (and graduate student!) instead of an undergraduate, and I went as my entrepreneurial self instead of just a starry-eyed, hopeful, could-be writer. I have (and am gaining more) experience, I'm growing a portfolio, and my references are awesome. It was easier than ever for me to strike up conversations with people and get excited about my own "business." (I've admitted to myself that this is turning into more than just "something I do on the side.")
