In love with sociolinguistics
Books about cowboys, manliness and masculinity, and linguistic identity construction swarm my desk and nightstand. I have two folders filled with articles on McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses--one yellow, physical folder under a pile of books and another folder on the desktop of my Mac (reading, note taking, and highlighting on my laptop saves me ink and paper, not to mention how much less it weighs in my bookbag!). My teacher's copy of Deborah Tannen's Gender and Discourse stays close by me. I read and write, read and type, read and revise what I wrote.
I haven't been this excited about a topic for a paper in awhile, so I'm trying to let myself have fun with this one. My paper writing routine got taken up a few notches earlier this summer, but letting myself slow down and really enjoy this one might be just what the doctor ordered. I can't explain how much I've loved this class on sociolinguistics.
Finally through with summer classes... now I'm halfway through my MA program. Sure, I'm still working on this final paper that's due Monday, but it's coming along just fine. It just feels great to let myself enjoy the work again. I might haul myself to the library tomorrow to focus on editing myself. Until then, I'm completely absorbed in writing.
If there was a way to earn a PhD in sociolinguistics and not be expected to teach sociolinguistics, I'd do it. I'm not interested in teaching it. It's just fascinating in application to what it is that I do want to do: teach writing.
