So much to blog, so little time (lately)

I started my new job yesterday. So far it's still relatively safe for me to talk about it... after I'm cleared I won't be able to say much at all. One of the policies even mentioned blogging, so I know I'm going to be writing less and less about work things. Perhaps that means more about personal and school-related things, or just less blogging in general. Only time will tell.

My work schedule is 7:30-4:00. Right now it's a little rough commuting, but at least my parents' house is closer than my apartment. Living out of a suitcase at my parents' house is getting old quickly, though, since the rest of my stuff is elsewhere... But it works for now and leaves me at least 40 extra minutes to sleep, so it's worth it.

The training at work is pretty neat. There's a lot of it, but it's helping already since I feel like I'm getting a grip on things. Plus the people are super! Everyone is so helpful (or willing to be helpful) that it kind of reminds me of the personal click I felt while I was at SHU. The entering "class" at the company is nice and small, so it's fun to get to know people well and relatively quickly.

I'm so pumped about learning more about technical writing. I got an abbreviated guide of common faux pas today and had a blast reading through it. I feel so geeky being so in love with language and syntax and mechanics and usage... especially because everyone else is not there to be a tech writer. But I feel unique in my role because I am the only tech writer being trained in my class. It's fun to be different. Besides, I'm getting to know about many more disciplines from the folks around me! I'm going to be reading a LOT of material in these first couple weeks, but I'm excited to learn where I fit in my job and where I fit in the company.

Good luck as you make this transition.

In many ways, it's great to be able to put your work behind you when you leave at the end of the day -- something it's very hard to do in academia.

Sounds like a great job, K. Congrats again... I know you'll do great word work. Keep serving the greater good and I know you'll be happy. (I owe you a coffee sometime, after the dust settles!)
