Pumpkin guts: reprise
Way back in 2005, at an Eye Contact poetry slam, I quickly scribbled a poem about pumpkin carving that follows the cadence of "O Christmas Tree." It often comes to mind when I see pumpkins, and then I have a Christmas song stuck in my head for the next week...
I thought I'd repost the poem because I just got to carve a pumpkin last night! My first jack 'o lantern in a few years... And, really, it's a Pac Man 'o Lantern.
To a Carvèd Pumpkin
O pumpkin guts
O pumpkin guts
Your seeds are mucus covered
Your mildew smell
Leaves barren shell
Fruition: fist discovered
Knife plungèd in
And smile bore in
Your face I carved, so caring
This Halloween
Your candle gleam
Through mask I've meant for scaring
This holiday, so thrilling
But pumpkin, your guts spilling
O pumpkin guts
O pumpkin guts
I'll roast you now for salting
And munch your guts
Orange, gooey smut
'Fore o'er the fence you're vaulting!
And for anyone who cares, no, there is not a candle inside... Yours truly is petrified of fire, so it's a mini lantern I got at the dollar store. It even flickers like a real flame!
