Update on Mom
Since my post about my mom's neck surgery, I realize I've been out of touch. Mom is doing okay. She came home after ten days (!) in the hospital. She's on blood thinners to deal with the blood clotting issues she is having as a result of the surgery. She's allowed to move around and such, but she gets tired quickly. A visiting nurse comes every day to check her wound and take her blood. There's still a clot near her heart, which is terrifying, but the blood thinners should help dissolve that eventually. (I still don't like that there isn't something more immediate to be done, but my opinion matters little when the doctors say that's all they can do.)
Mom still has some residual pain that feels like it did before the surgery. This worries me. The surgeon's take is that we need to see how things go with physical therapy before jumping to conclusions that it didn't work, or work as well as we'd hoped. Everyone's natural response is to be angry that this may have been for nothing, but we're holding out hope that mom's nerves (literal nerves) will calm down from the traumatic surgery and not cause any further pain. The doctor plans to keep tabs on the pain though to ensure that it's not because of something with the surgery...
Her surgeon gave her permission to drive the other day, and I'm still not sure how I feel about that (considering that all of my neck problems have stemmed from incidences involving cars...), but mom drives on occasion. Less these days because my parents just can't get a break lately--two of three cars are in the shop. I'm taking my dad to go pick one up today, so at least that helps. Mom definitely can't drive the car we're picking up today, though, because it's a manual.
Thanks to all of you for your help. My mom is a special lady, with a will of steel. I know she'll recover and that if something else needs to be done she'll take it like a champ, but your prayers have meant so much. We're really grateful for all the prayers and thoughts from our friends and family.
