Conference proposal accepted!
I'm thrilled to announce that I'll be presenting a paper at the 2009 conference for the English Association of Pennsylvania State Universities (EAPSU).
The paper I'm presenting I wrote for a course I took last summer (Language and Social Context). The title is "Masculinity and manliness: Cormac McCarthy’s cowboys in All the Pretty Horses." (Please excuse the use of APA style, all you MLA-ers! I have to use it for my courses since I'm technically in an education program at IUP.) In the paper, I focus on the language the characters use (specifically John Grady Cole and his foil Jimmy Blevins) and how it establishes (or diminishes) their cowboy motives throughout the book.
I almost didn't submit. I got the call for papers about two days before the due date, scoffed, and still flagged it in my inbox. I decided on the day of the deadline to submit. I culled text from my paper and synthesized things a bit to suit the CFP, and emailed it. I honestly didn't expect to be accepted. I'm glad that I am, though! My first conference as a grad student (second conference presentation overall--first was 4Cs in NYC, and that'll be tough to top!). I can't compare Shippensburg, PA to NYC--that just isn't fair. I'm still expecting to have a great time. After all, Dorothy Allison is the keynote speaker!
This is so worth taking a day of vacation from work. :-D
