I enjoyed reading the Malcolm X story. My agenda item is how much one would apprieciate reading better if they had taught themselves instead of being taught at a young age. I'm not saying that its wrong to be taught a young age, it is actually very good. But I believe reading would be more apprieciated if it was self taught. In the story he says that now he reads whenever he gets the chance, I'm not saying that people don't read but according to studies people that can read dont read as much as they should.

Over the years, however, I have become more accustomed to it--and sometimes I actually enjoy it. I think at a young age we have been forced to read-- aka busy work in school. I think if many were given the "opportunity" to read, many indivudals would do it more often. In our society today, I also think it's easier to turn on the TV than to open a book and read-- and that's defintely not a good habit we as a society have gotten into.
Posted by: Amanda Herold at September 27, 2004 06:09 PMWell....lets see...I agree...haha...I really think it is true that unless a person really enjoys reading...they wont read...I can read and since i can I also enjoy it, so I can appreciate literature. I do agree that when you teach yourself something that you do appreciate it more..so teaching yourself to read would be an amazing accomplishment...so yeah i do agree that self teaching is great..and that those who are self taugh might appreciate things more, but I believe it all depends on the person..=)
