Notes on the State of Virginia

Honestly I was very bored with this essay. Jefferson just went on about the differences between blacks and whites. Can someone explain this quote to me, I was very confused by it. "The slave, when made free, might mix with, without staining the blood of his master. But with us a second is necesary, unknown to history. When, freed he is to be removed beyond the reason of mixture."I guess my agenda item for this piece is; why are people of different races seen as inferior to whites?

I have no clue what that essay means...maybe about Jeffersons idea that to get rid of slavery is to just move every black person from where whites live. IE segregation? Thats my take on it. To answer your agenda item, I think races are found inferior to whites because that is what we've learned all of our lives. Look at history books in schools. You never see one just dedicated to how african americans overcame their struggles...it's all about how white people made it. So people will begin to think that since other races aren't mentioned they aren't important. I think I answered your agenda item.

I feel that a lot of black people look at whites as bad. I feel that they still hate white because of what happend to their race tons of years ago. Move on and everyone should get along.

I believe whites are seen as superior because the founders of our country were white. We came over here, we settled it, we fought for it and we won it. Now personally, I don't think that makes us any better than anyone else, I just think that's why. We brought the slaves over here, so since we were their owners, they were always inferior to us, and so many people still believe they are. If you ask me, I think that Indians should be superior to everyone in this country. After all, it was theirs. We decided it would be ok to just take what we wanted from others to make ourselves happy. I think that's pretty shallow.

I too didn't really understand this essay. I say your agenda item was quite interested. I asked my friends outside of the classroom to answer this question and they said: "because only whites demoralized blacks" and "because everyone still has Hitler on their mind." I thought theri answers were rather funny, but who am I to judge everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I can't say that i agree with some of you. First of all, we all know that slavery happened years ago. Everybody might have forgiven eachother but that does not mean that we have all forgotten. I think i kind of agree with Caroline,i think that white race is superior because the founders of this country were white

I think people are seen as inferior to the whites, but I don't understand why. Yes whites did have the black people as slaves, but when slavery was abolished the whites shouldn't have been still seen as the powerful people. Whites and blacks can do all the same things now and that old time thinking of the whites being above the blacks should stop. Everyone on this Earth are equals.

I agree with Caroline on this one. I mean it's the most logical explanation. It is because the whites founded this country.

I think that other races are seen as inferoior to whites becuase most people that are successful in this world are white and that is all we have basically ever seen. Like Caroline said, whites founded this country, so we kind of have a head start on getting everything started and advancing in everything we did. Will another race ever been seen as equal to the white race?

That is just the way it always has been. The whites out number the blacks, therefore they have more say. Its like a two to one vote. Plus people are just mean
