SHU's Production: Kindertransport

Samuels, Kindertransport--Drama As Literature EL250

Seton Hill's production of Kindertransport was in fact worth seeing. The cast was mostly freshman, which speculated that it might not be as good as the previous plays perforemed. But I think that they were proved wrong. I think the director, Kellee Van Aken had put her own input into this play. For example, when I read the script I don't remember Eva jumping out of the train when she was worried about leaving Lil. If I was directing I would put emphasis on the detail on how the biological family was changed by Eva (or Evelyn) behavior post-World War II. How you spin this play off if you were directing it?

We the Media News Writing--EL227

The pressure that the elite controlled mainstream media has on society as a whole is extremely astonishing. It is very unfortunate to see that we have problems getting normal news from good sources. Like when the author discussed about what Trett Lott said at Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday. The first people to even say anything about it is a few bloger with a good conscience. This chokehold that the elite have on the media is ridiculous, that is why more and more people are telling the news via technology than reling on other people.

Spark Near Gasoline

Schnitzer, Professor Bernhardi Drama as Literature-EL250

This play, in a nutshell, is basically favoring the collapse of anti-Semitism. This play take place in 1900 in Vienna, Austria. Of course, we know what is going to happen about thirty years in this region, but in a dark twist of irony this play was used by Hitler and the Nazi party to prove that Jewish people are inferior. The prime example that they had use is this end of the first act:

PREIST: All the greater would by my sin if I moved from this threshold without having ministered to the dying woman the consolations of our holy religion.

BERNH: From this sin God and every human judge would be declared absolved. Yes, your Reverence. For I, as physician, cannot permit you to approach the bed of this patient.

What the Nazis didn't tell the German people is that Bernhardi kept the priest out acting as a doctor and not a Jewish man in power. They used somthing that was undienably there and used it a mean to kill millions of people. Even though the Nazis used this, Schnitzer wanted it to be a tool against anti-Semitism. So, do you think that this play can be a better tool for a Anti-Semite or a person who just want to break the walls between the Jewish community and the rest of the country.

Southern Slang and Struggles

Wilson, Fences Drama as Liturature--EL250

Fences is a good depiction of what exactly it is like to be a African-Americans in the South. With the obvious, being the slang and the usage of certain words like "ain't". It also seems that most depictions of a Black person from the South (or anywhere for that matter) is shown as being ignorant and hateful. Like this qoute for example:
TROY: I ain't making up nothing. I'm telling you the facts of what happened.

Now, I know people in the South talk like that (myself sometimes being from Virginia) and Wilson shows it perfectely, but the media portrayal of this kind of person is swamped with stereotypes galore. Basically, Black Southerners deal with the same problems and believe in the same things as everyone else. Read Rose's quote:
ROSE: (sing) Jesus, be a fence all around me every day
Jesus, I want you to protect me as I travel along the way.

They believe in Christainity like every one else in this country...
Here's another:
LYONS: I know I got to eat. But I got to live too. I need something that gonna help me to get out of bed in the morning.

They also have dreams. This play shows the family modern structure, with crumbling foundations (like a lot of American families). This play not only deals with outside prejudices it also deal with some in the family. Like how Troy deals with everyone else with the extensive use of the word "nigger". The whole character of Troy is a total totalitarian style of discipline. Like the huge fight between Cory and himself and what led up to it.

In short, judging people from different cultures isn't right. But plays like this, shows how a group of people are just like everyone else, the only differnece is the way we approach universal problems. This play should be use to learn more about this culture.

A Common English Twist

Bolt, Man For All Seasons Drama As Literature--EL250

English history is the backbone of this entire play. For King Henry VIII break from the Catholic Church to the character Sir Thomas More. Some people see plays like this and Kindertransport as boring plays because a good deal of history is involved. Books on history can only tell you the fact on what happened and not give you the emotions. In fact, this play gives a comedic twist to 16th century England. I think that this can possibly be a way to tell history more effectively. Do you think that student can use plays instead of History books to get a well rounded picture of an event.

Torn Away

Samuels, Kindertransport -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

Post | Check Latest Trackbacks
http://blo

Eva was completely separated from her family when she fled to England. But what is worse that she was also torn from her culture of being Jewish and German when Lil took care of her. Eva was forced by Lil to learn English and Christain customs.

LIL: What about your sandwiches? When did you eat them if you were writing all lunchtime?

EVA:Sandiches got ham in. I not to eat ham. It from pig.

LIL: But I asked you and you said yes

This conversation continues to question Eva's very religion and custom. She ran from Germany to prevent that kind of hatred, so why go there and basically be told that what she believe in is wrong? After all that she been through at least Lil should have embraced Eva's (or Evelyn) culture a little bit better in the begining of the play. Don't you think so?

Tunnel Vision- (adj) Half truths

News Writing-- EL227

It is totally clear that the media leave out certain details to make a a point of view better or cause people alarm. The examples in the book stated the dangers of looking in only at one direction for an explanation hence ignoring alternative explanation that gives a rounder, fuller picture of a subject. Dr. Jerz stated on Wednesday that using these "rules" is sort of skill. You can draw people in by using this. Like a used car salesman for example. Or better yet the example from the book, that had a statistic that infectious diseases rose by 58%, but what they didn't say is that most of the victims were elderly , a group most likely to catch a disease very easily. They tell you something that is true to make a succesful lie. Or worse, make the other side look stupid. Like this opinion piece by the devil in the flesh himself Bill O'Reilly. He says how much it the Democrats are bashing Alito, but what he is not going to tell you is that they want to know more about Alito before making him a judge, like the Yahoo article says. So who to believe, yourselves.

Yes...Blame the Messenger!

It Ain't Necessarily So (Ch 8 & 9) -- News Writing (EL 227)

Would you believe smoking doesn't cause cancer if the research was done by the Tobacco industry. If you said no, than you are "blaming the messenger". We must read facts with an open mind and make sure that what we read is valid. This is more likely used in advertising Any big business that harm (Beer, tobacco, and car [pollution] companies) will indeed make up some fancy study to make their products more marketable. So we mustn't fall into the "hype" of the product, but instead look at the research behind it.

Polls+Politicians= A Big Mess

It Ain't Necessarily So (Ch 6 & 7) -- News Writing (EL 227)

We have read about how polls are used to prove a point. I have one and I going to use a poll. Americans are infuenced by this Adminstration negatively or positively this poll is from the Washington Post. Now a democratic politican can use this poll to gain voter s, Polls are like there secret weapon yet it can backfire because not all of America is being polled. Can this be used in an accurate way to determine the U.S. look on Pesident Bush?

Embarrasing!

Williams, The Glass Menagerie (Scenes 1-5) -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

Tennessee Williams was an acomplished playwright. But his death was less dignified. I said to some people that a toothpick while eating a snack had killed him. But in actually he suffocated to death by squirting nose spray in his nose but forget to take the cap off and it fell in his mouth and choke him. This fact was in the book called DUH: The Stupid History of the Human Race, now that may be distorted fact, but no matter how you try to fix it up there is so way that you can may that kind of death positive. Just a fact I wanted to throw out there. I'll bring the book tomorrow

What should she expect

Williams, The Glass Menagerie (Scenes 1-5) -- Drama as Literature (EL 250)

This play shows the old look on marriage and relationships. Amanda, after discovering that Laura drop out of school, decided that she should hurry up and get married. Laura of course do not what this to happen so quickly. During the time the play is set (close to the time Machinal was made), women was told by society to marry for financial support. But it is evident that Laura may not have the strength to go through life by herself. Note that she became phyiscally ill at school and never went back. But that doesn't necassrily mean that she should get married for that support. What about the family she lives with now? Is it to dysfunctional? So should dhe go though the rough road by her lonsome or have a person ... not necassarily a gentleman caller to help her?
